11.25.08

The executive boards of UAAO, CSA, & FASA have agreed to pass a three part resolution on the boycott of Studio4. Parts one and three have been posted on the resolutions page to the left and the second part will be forthcoming. A resolution will soon be voted upon in the near future by the general assembly of UAAO.

11.21.08

Major Update Everyone! After we met with representatives from the Housing Administration, UAAO and APA101 can now hold its weekly general meetings once again in the YK Lounge starting next semester.

Second, a recent incident at Studio 4 occurred on the night of November 8, 2008. CSA + FASA held a club party that night but there was a dispute with Reese the manager of Studio4. Read the full Michigan Daily article here: http://www.michigandaily.com/content/2008-11-20/student-groups-upset-studio-4

Go to the UAAO Blog for the official decision from Trelawny Boynton on the YK Lounge as well as CSA + FASA's story on the Studio4 incident.

UAAO's article in the Michigan Daily has been published. If you haven't seen it, visit the article here: http://www.michigandaily.com/content/na/housing-

11.5.08

UAAO has passed a new resolution on our stance against Housing Department's enforcement of space use. We have a unanimous decision thanks to our member organizations' advocates and members at large. To check out the full resolution, go to the resolutions tab on the left.

As for the current situation, UAAO is in the process of setting up a meeting with members of Latino Student's Organization (LSO) and the Black Student Union (BSU). We hope to meet next week with representatives of the Housing Administration.

Stay tuned for further updates and if you haven't already done so, sign our petition at

10.28.08

Hi everyone, UAAO is going to pass an official resolution about our stance on the housing policy. However, to do that, we'll need the help of advocates to vote on this resolution at this week's meeting Oct. 29th, and next week's meeting on Nov. 5th. It is important to note that the more advocates we have at the next two meetings, the voice of the community will be better represented.

10.27.08

If you come to our meetings, then you might remember that we've mentioned the Housing Administration's policy on room reservations and how they're enforcing restrictions on how many times student groups can reserve rooms. Or maybe you've noticed that we haven't been able to use the YK Lounge every week, or have had our time cut short.

We believe that this policy disproportionately affects student groups of color, as all of the Multicultural and Minority-Cultural Lounges that are meant to be especially for student groups of color, are located in the Residence Halls. As one of the only A/PIA spaces located centrally on campus, we feel that to not have unrestricted access marginalizes and limits our space, voice, and community on campus.

We hope that you will stand with us and sign our petition:

9.23.08:

The housing department has decided that student groups can no longer have standing meetings in the YK Lounge. This being said, UAAO can only reserve the YK Lounge for about a month before we would have to relocate. UAAO has had a long history since the dedication of the YK Lounge and is the only lounge in the dorms for A/PIAs. The atmosphere of the YK Lounge is a perfect place where many Asian/A/PIA groups can share their ideals and beliefs all in one room. The University of Michigan takes pride in calling itself diverse, but without being able to use a lounge dedicated to Asian/A/PIA awareness, it denies the acknowledgment of the A/PIA community. At this rate, many opportunities on this campus once provided for people of color will perish. So we ask you to stand in solidarity, to stand as a united voice, and keep the YK Lounge for student groups. UAAO will soon be deciding the actions that will be taken and we thank you for your support. E-mail uaao.board@umich.edu for more information or how you can get involved to keep the YK lounge for student group use.

8.21.08:

11.19.07:
Slight update on the website, the official UAAO Blog can now be accessed here and through the navigation bar on your left (below the "Photo Gallery" tab). The UAAO Blog will be regularly updated with information about major actions in the community as well as act as a forum for issue and current event-based discussions. Please check it out and leave some comments.

The "UAAO Forum" tab was removed from the navigation bar due to its inactivity and ineffective use. Although the forum still exists, it is no longer used by UAAO Board members and can not be accessed through the UAAO website.

In addition, look forward to some more updates on the UAAO website in the coming weeks. Everyone on UAAO board wishes you a happy Thanksgiving, so take some time to relax as the semester draws to a close.

09.08.06:
Welcome to the newly designed United Asian American Organizations webpage, your source for APIA issues and events on the University of Michigan campus. UAAO would like to thank all the organizations and participants that were involved with the APIA Community BBQ, without everyone's help the event would not have been as successful.

This newly designed UAAO website has many new features and the following are just some ways to maximize the practicality of the website:

1.) Publicize your events through the:
------ "Upcoming Events" box
------ "UAAO Calendar" website
------ "Online Forum" section

To have your event in the "Upcoming Events" box send an email to robchin@umich.edu with the subject line "<Your Org's name> Upcoming Events" or you can attend a weekly UAAO meeting and let us know about the event! Remember to include the essential details, a short description is optional. For the "UAAO Calendar" everyone has access to view the calendar, but to post actual events you will need the username and password, which is given to your organization's advocate at the UAAO meeting. Lastly, for the "Online Forum" section, you can post messages after going through registration.

2.) "UAAO Programs" drop down menu:
To see a listing of UAAO's primary programs, visit the drop down menu entitled "UAAO Programs" located just under the UAAO banner. Each listing will either direct you the program's primary webpage or will contain some background information about the event. Some of the UAAO programs included there are APA 101, APIA High School Conference and GenAPA. Applications for APIA High School Conference core can be downloaded here and applications for GenAPA core can be downloaded here. In addition, you can download these applications through their respective webpages.

3.) UAAO Chat Box:
The chat box is a nifty feature to have more interactivity with the website. You can drop a line to introduce youself, get your questions answered, or have dialogues with the entire APIA community. One of the few restrictions UAAO has about this feature is to not advertise events there (use the other features to publicize your events).

The rest of the features are quite self-explanatory, feel free to drop the UAAO Board an email (uaao.board@umich.edu) and remember to come out to the weekly meetings! The first mass meeting is this upcoming Wednesday and the essential details are below.

-- UAAO First Mass Meeting
------ Date: Wedneday, September 13, 2006

------ Description: Come out to UAAO's first mass meeting to learn about what UAAO is all about and the opportunities that are available in the community. Meet this year's board in person and get to know other leaders in the APIA community.

If you are interested in becoming involved with planning, please send an email to apiachange.core@umich.edu.

2.) UMich APIA students! Ever been complimented on your english? Told to go back to "China?" Called "Bruce Lee" or "ching, chong, ching?" Threatened or intimidated because you are Asian/Pacific Islander? We want your testimony. Find out how to submit it here.
