(ANN ARBOR) - Led by Music Director Alex Sutton, the Michigan Pops Orchestra presents Victors and Villains on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the Michigan Theater! The University's only student-run and student-directed orchestra performs a unique concert showcasing hero and villain themed music inspired by well-known movies, Broadway shows, and classical favorites. The program includes selections from Superman, Wicked, James Bond 007, Hercules, Spiderman, Star Wars; Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Daniel Bernard Roumain's Voodoo Violin Concerto, and more! By incorporating a full chorus, vocal soloists, multimedia, special effects and antics, Victors and Villains promises to be a show infused with fun and excitement for concert-goers of all ages.

At the close of its twelfth season, the Michigan Pops Orchestra has gained an excellent reputation on campus as well as in the Ann Arbor community for its fun themes and programming that allows audiences to experience orchestral concerts in an exciting atmosphere. Pops appeals to the music lover in everyone, sampling music from movies, jazz, rock, pop culture, and show tunes. Now 100 members strong, the Michigan Pops represents a fusion of students from a variety of colleges and schools within the University. As a branch of the University Activities Center, the Michigan Pops Orchestra continues to enhance musical diversity and share its passion for music with the community.

As a founding member of the Michigan Pops Orchestra and a University of Michigan alum, Haitian-American artist Daniel Bernard Roumain makes this exclusive Ann Arbor appearance with the Michigan Pops Orchestra, performing his original composition Voodoo Violin Concerto. A former student of U-M professors William Bolcom, Bright Sheng, and Michael Daugherty, Mr. Roumain is known for his unique hybrid of classical music roots and innovative sounds, having collaborated with artists including the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zanes Dance Company, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Phillip Glass, and DJ Spooky, proving that he's "about as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets" (New York Times).
