Painting Party I

"So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God,..." Haggai 1:14

Painting Crew: Kevin, Ben, Linda, Eric, Don, and Vic. Joy didn't get in the picture :-(.
Thank you coming on a Saturday, painting crew! You did a great job! God is great!

As soon as I scheduled our first painting party, people informed me that it was a bad Saturday to do a painting party! The Alpha retreat was that day and something else was going on that would affect the attendance (was is a home game?) I didn't realize until I started working at ULC that the home games control everythingin Ann Arbor! So, I thought I'd have two people come and decided not make the chili I promised. But God had another plan, He called a total of seven servants that day! It was awesome!

Initial Clean-Up

First thing first. Clean up! We spent days cleaning up the building. We hauled away anything we won't need. We put a lot of things in our "bargain basement" and many people came to take them home! We needed to have the space cleaned out so we could move on with the renovation. The basement needed to be cleaned out so we could start the "café project" (I can't wait!)

The mess and the demolition
(Top L) One of the rooms in the office area. It required a lot of sorting and throwing away. Thanks to the volunteers, especially Vic and Al, for sorting all the paper! (Top R) After hours of cleaning. (R) Al shoveling the rubbles from the demolition in the 1st floor office to be turned into the new bathrooms. Al is one of our faithful volunteers who has come regularly. He had a brilliant idea of turning the old phone-booth (L) into a pantry with a door from the kitchen. He just finished putting the shelves up in the pantry! Thank you, Al!

Fellowship Time
The clean-up crew takes a break. (L to R) Jim, Dan, Sidd, Mike, Matt and Wendi.

Anne
Our hope is for the community around ULC to attend, including graduate students and fellows. With this in mind, we set up a nursery, just in case anyone brings a child to be cared for. Thank you Anne for your efforts in getting the temporary nursery area ready! The great part of this job is to get to know people. I found out that Anne's late husband grew up in Pittsburgh area. My husband and I (Norma), met, married and lived in Pittsburgh when we were in school! What a small world!

Some of His Servants

'Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"' Isaiah 6:8

The great thing about my job as a Volunteer Coordinator is that I get to know so many servants of God. It's such a privilege! Here are some of them:

Ruth and Al
Al has been faithfully coming to help with the renovation. Currently he's working on cleaning all window frames so that they can be painted soon. If you haven't noticed, we have new windows! They keep the building cozy! Ruth has used her patience and persitence to scrub our kitchen! Thank you, Al and Ruth!

Linda
Linda worked countless hours to make the chancel a sacred and clean place to prepare the Lord's Supper. She has stocked up the chancel with needed supplies. Please thank Linda for her tireless efforts! Please also thank Nancy (no picture, yet) for polishing all of the chancel equipments! Thank you for being great servants of the Lord!

Patti and Ron
Thank you for working countless hours with Linda getting the chancel so clean and pleasant! Thank you for picking up the new refrigerator.

Wendi and Jim
It was great to find out that Wendi was baptized at ULC. As a student Jim used to use the darkroom...a lot! They have had fond memories of ULC. Thank you, Jim and Wendi, for helping us restore the memory back! Here they reorganizes the kitchen.

Mike and Sidd
We can garantee a cheerful day when these two show up! When they come, their enthusiasm is contagious! Thank you for lending your muscles and skills! It's great to have both of you on board!

Eric
Eric is a hardworker! He has been coming on lots of Saturdays. His skills and servant heart are an inspiration! Thank you for giving your Saturdays to the rebuilding of His Temple! Thank you to your wife and daughter for letting you work on Saturdays!

His Temple

"'Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne." Zechariah 6:12-13

What an honor it is to be a part of the renovation of His Temple at ULC (University Lutheran Chapel). My name is Norma Polk and my official title is "Volunteer Coordinator" for the renovation of the building. My passion to reach out to UM students started when my husband, Thad, decided to start inviting his students to our house for dinner. I'm hoping that I'm not only a part of rebuilding and renovating the actual building, but also rebuilding the Body of Christ at ULC.

The University Lutheran Chapel is one of the sites of St. Luke Lutheran Church . It is a place for students coming from homes with solid Christian foundations to step into an adult faith life. It is also a place for those who are searching for the meaning of life and who need to hear the Gospel.

The Chapel and the student Center are now undergoing a major renovation to better support the ministries. Volunteers play a major role in this process. “Those who are far away will come and help to build the temple of the LORD, and you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you. This will happen if you diligently obey the LORD your God." Zechariah 6:15

This blog is going to document the renovation. We'll also post opportunities for volunteers to serve.
