Ann Arbor Indoor
Jan. 29, 2000
The University of Michigan hosted its annual, one day tournament. This year we had less time due to pee-wee baseball, thus only 6 teams participated this year. Every team had 4 45 minute games and 2 byes (the field was regulation length, 10 yards too narrow, and 5 yard short endzones) and then semis and finals.
| Results from Pool Play | |
| MagnUM "non-Rookies" | 4-0 |
| Dayton | 3-1 |
| Indiana | 2-2 |
| Notre Dame | 2-2 |
| Ohio State | 1-3 |
| MagnUM "Rookies" | 0-4 |
Michigan "non-Rookies" were magnUM's returners. Although 4-0, we squeaked 1 point victories over Dayton and IU and a 2 point victory over ND. Dayton beat ND in the final round to claim 2nd place in a very tight match with lead changes throughout the whole game. Indiana and ND tied for 3rd, but since they did not play each other, IU won the tiebreaker with points. The semis match-ups were magnUM v. ND and Dayton v. IU
MagnUM stole some of the rookies for the semis and they should their power as magnUM would win 10-6 while Dayton would overpower IU 9-7. The finals was another rematch for Dayton and magnUM with magnUM pulling away late 11-7 at 2:15 am.
Dayton is definitely the up and coming team in this region and they played without one of their best throwers. ND is solid as always plus a lot more depth this year. The captain was even struggling to get pt. IU was a big suprise giving everyone a good game that they played. They should be tough this year.
It was a fun start to the spring season, indoors and on astroturf. Once the snow is off the ground, we will see you all outside.

Tournament
courtesy of TIM
Hello all. MagnUM held its 4th annual indoor tourney this past weekend. We had won this tourney the past 2 years, so we were attempting to keep the title in AA one more time. This year, magnUM split into 2 squads, one squad was all first year magnUMites while the other squad was veteran magnUMites with dos newcomers. (I will tell the story of the veteran team).
Our first game was against the men from Columbus, Ohio St. We were not really ready to play nor ready to guard against unwarranted hucks. The score was 5-5 and relatively low intensity, with neither defense doing anything. Not until they dropped the first pass were we able to convert a defensive score. The game was rather uneventful for us. Pretty conservative d. Buck had a beautiful grab off a low forehand from Phil. The never stopped our offense. We would cruise the rest of the game on a 7-3 run. Final score: magnUM 12 OSU 8
During a bye, we were able to watch the rooks play against IU. Not too shabby for them rookies. But we then prepared for our next round vs. Notre Dame. We came out pretty hot this game 3-1, but cooled off quickly as they would grab the lead 4-3. At 5-all, Buck would get a big point block near our endzone which would give us the lead for good. This was the magnUM play/player of the game. Jeff had a big throwing game with 2 huge break mark scores for scores. I caught 5 goals. Reek scored a goal after he broke his man's ankles with a fake. Our d was the key to this game. Our O was just too sluggish and impatient. We did win though: magnUM 9 Notre Dame 8.
The next game was against Dayton. They did not seem ready to play as they would drop the opening pass our endzone which Graves quickly threw to Rook for the opening score. The would come right back and the game quickly turned into a one-point battle all game. Joe B. actually laid out for a disc, which he missed and cut his lip. Awwww. Hales was playing some nice d in he air. Phil had a tremendous layout grab (magnUM play of the game) of a Hales huck and a beautiful sky grab of my huck. Angus, using the backhand force to his advantage, threw a beautiful bomb to me late in the game. We actually were able to grab a 2 point 8-6 lead near the time cap. I decided to take the game over and threw 2 discs away, tie game 8-8. We would work the disc down on O near the goalline, my man falls, Hales hammer, I grab it in the endzone, score. magnUM 9 Dayton 8.
Our final round robin game was against Indiana. We were still a little exhausted from our 2 previous games, and they were not. We were hoping to get a lead early and roll. They would have other plans. Again our lazy deep d allowed them to catch several not so good hucks. The played a lot of zone, we worked it pretty well except when we would throw a hammer. D'oh. Palmer had a brilliant throwing game where he broke the mark for the score twice on the same point (damned pick calls). We looked rather tired and with Hales' knee on the fritz, we would squeak out a victory: magnUM 9 IU 8.
Thus we would get a bye until the semis. We were 4-0. We were able to watch the rookies play some more. Some highlights- The Human Highlight Film- Boz-- spiking the disc after a marathon point and he later took out Ted. Boz is drinking milk, watch out. Max came down with anything in the air. Sean all over the place. Brix throwing tons of stuff. Rob with some nice long bombs. The cup of Brix, Scooter, and Sean playing wonderfully indoors. I can barely remember our games...
Anyway, we were in the semis and playing ND again. They were 2-2 and loss by points to IU. Thus, a rematch. We wanted to get ahead early so we could save some legs for the finals (we also let some of the rookies who were still ready, to play). Me to Phil to start off and the game was rolling. Dave Pohl had a huge game, a big layout block on the 2nd point of the game to get things started. He also had 2 more blocks, including one big sky d, that prevented a score. (DP earned magnUM player of the game because of his performance). Max still refused to miss anything in the air. Angus, Palmer, Jeff, and Joe worked the disc beautifully especially near the endzone. Skow had a full field double burn as he d'd a swill hammer, big throw from Jeff, just outside the endzone. Then Skow would eventually catch the score. Alex, as usual, faking everyone out on his cuts. This was a big game for the whole team as we set the tone early and played well all game. magnUM 10 ND 6 (I think...)
This would set-up another rematch with Dayton in the finals. They receive, a big huck, but not in. Skow would d the eventual score attempt. Jeff huck to me to DP for the goal. 1-0. Dayton would come right back and break us to make it 1-2. We would finally find mo. They seemed a little more tired then us and we would use that to our advantage. Jeff and Raj played some nice zone d. Nick E. had a brilliant game and he earned magnUM plauer of the game with his beautiful layout grab of my throw. Angus had another mistake free game. Our d had a much better game playing d, especially against their hucking offense. Buck finding openings when his man poached. DP with another good game. All in all a solid performance which lead to a victory and championship (I tried to copy the Dave Hunter tournament winning backhand to Max. We scored, but not as pretty as Dave's). I think the final score was 11-7 or 11-8 or 10-7 or something. Anyway, we won.
It was a pretty good weekend, although we made games closer then we wanted, but hey that is what the fans want. DP had, I believe, the best tournament of us all. Although little mentioned, Graves and Rook played spectacular defense. The reason they were never mentioned was their men were rarely ever involved (rook awesome job on Shiel). Angus and Palmer worked the disc all weekend flawlessly. Jeff was Jeff, but when Hales was nursing, he really stepped up. Joe had his best magnUM performance. Nick E., quiet as ever, but solid as ever, especially is silky smooth cuts. Buck definitely stepped it up at the right times. Alex and Raj played nicely on d and were always open on O. Phil still playing tall, and occasionally near the ground. Reek and Skow stepped in nicely and it seemed they were both magnUM veterans by the end of the day. All those who we added during the semis and finals (max, dave s., sean, rob, scoote, boz, brix, etc.) were key additions and played well.
It was a grand tournament. And a good way to start off the spring/winter season. Here comes the freight train, choo choo!!!
MagnUM summary from Arctic Vogue
courtesy of TIM
Hello all. This past weekend magnUM went down to Cincy to play in Artic Vogue a half college/half club tourney. Friday, two vans headed down early to Jeff's house while Phil, Raj (Dawson), Ralph, and I went down late. The journey was uneventful, except a pretty horrific Wendy's experience. Enough said.
We awoke early to Mr. Bischoff playing some weird synthesizer noise really loud and then laughing even louder as we all looked confused. After a quick breakfast, we arrived at the fields to find we were the one seed in our pool and we did not have a first round bye for the first time ever.
Our first game was against Wittenberg + Dave Swank. To be honest with you, this game seems like a long time ago. I know we got of pretty big early and a lot of people got some experience. It was a good game for us to play first because it got everyone invovled and everyone played pretty well. We had some uncharacteristic drops, but hey we weren't warmed up, I guess. Final score: magnUM 13 Wittenberg 8.
The next game was against I'm with CUPID from Cincy. They were not so bad, but we would take it to half 7-4/5 and then role to start the 2nd half. There were some pretty good points in this game. Phil threw a high hangy hammer in Peter Chi's direction that Peter somehow pulled down. An amazing grab. Kohn had a big "d" on the dump and was very close on a couple others. Ralph took over one point by getting the disc every other pass down the sideline as he left his man in the dust (or mud). Hales would come out of retirement for this game to throw a hammer best described as a "quack". I threw a 30 yarder to Palmer which he politely macked to Nick E. for the score. I also had to check feet three times and this guy still did not threw a 30 yarder to Palmer which he politely macked to Nick E. for the score. I also had to check feet three times and this guy still did not believe so I said (while pointing) "That was a bullshit call" And then would throw and invert to Phil for the score. The rookies would fail to end the game twice, but eventually we would win: magnUM 13 I'm with CUPID 10.
Our 3rd game was against a Great Lakes Region opponent, Ohio U. The old university of wonderful coach, Ricky. They came out in zone and would score the first point. We came right back with the next 2 points (including beating their zone). They would stay in z all the first half and it gave us some trouble. They were successful in stopping our hucks, but we were able to work through most of time. They would evenutally abandon the zone after Jeff, Angus, and Hales would slice through it. Our d was not spectacular at first, but it would tighten up later. I would have 3 point blocks on one guy during one point (true story, although one was caught). We made a big run in the 2nd half to extend the lead and then the rookies came on the field to end the game. OU would commit a turn and then magnUM turned it over right back. Then OU slowly working up the field until Max got into the way. The disc was eventually sent to Reek who threw deep (sort of) to over right back. Then OU slowly working up the field until Max got into the way. The disc was eventually sent to Reek who threw deep (sort of) to Scooter who was calling for the disc. Luckily, D-Pak was there to catch it. He would swing it to Peter then to Scooter for the score. magnUM wins 13-8 with the rookies ended the game. They were pumped.
The last game of the day was against good old Notre Dame. Already our 5th time in 3 tournaments that we have played them! We came out a little sluggish and they took a short lead. We would claw our way back to take a 7-6 half time lead. Max and Phil were playing some good air disc. Jeff was throwing well. Angus was working it. But our defense was not as good as we hoped. We seemed a little sluggish. Palmer, DP, Brix, and I played some cup on a couple points that was able to frustrate them and we took advantage, opening up a little gap. But it was still not enough to slam the door. Our offense would take care of the rest. Hales to me deep. I believe Jeff to someone deep, I forget. We were able to paly better D, but unable to convert late in the 2nd half. Evenutally it was 12-10 with ND pulling to us. We would turn it over quick, but Phil made an amazing layout D in their endzone to stop them from scoring on a nice huck. Then Jeff to pulling to us. We would turn it over quick, but Phil made an amazing layout D in their endzone to stop them from scoring on a nice huck. Then Jeff to me, I saw a guy wearing a yellow shirt streak deep, I throw it. It was D-Pak with about 10 yards on his man wide open, but I had thrown it just a step too far. ND's disc. Eventually we get another break and then we end it with a hammer to Jeff from myself. Final score: magnUM 13 ND 10...
We were 4-0 for the day and went to watch flywheel for a little bit. They were rolling over Oberlin so we went to eat. We saw a dark angel walking into Olive Garden so we went to a pizza place. Afterwards some went Jeff's, some went to the hotel. There was really no party, so we went watched the dunk contest (Vince Carter is amazing!!!) and made fun of Jesse, and others. Anyway we awoke Sunday, went to Waffle House and then to the fields.
Our first game was agianst the quarters against 16,000 Drunks (the same team we lost to in the semis last year). This year we were pretty determined to win, especially for Hales! They came out in zone, but we walked through it. WE traded points for a little bit and we could not convert once we forced a turnover. They would break first and it seemed we would not force anymore WE traded points for a little bit and we could not convert once we forced a turnover. They would break first and it seemed we would not force anymore turnovers. BUt after good team d, we forced a lazy throw into a poach. After a patient endzone O, Phil found DP in the endzone. We took the lead again. And then we took half 7-5 after another bad throw by the drunks lead to a Jeff huck to me to Palmer for the score. The 2nd half started the same with us trading points. They would break first and tie up the game. But we would break right back after Rook forced a bad break mark throw. OUr deep game started to heat up as Jeff would hit Max and I hit Skow and Phil (on different occasions). Phil hit DP with a beautiful hammer. Skow was also playing some good deep d. THey brought to 11-10 after I overthrew Jeff on a hammer. Our O would score easy on the next point. Then I d'd there first pass. After a timeout. Me to Phil back to me to Skow for the score. magnUM 13 16,000 Drunks 10.
We advanced to the semis against the Chicago club team (with Paul Callaway with a "bum knee"). Incidentally, I have not mentioned the weather yet. Saturday was cold but nice. Sunday was cold, but a little rainy and wet. It kept getting rainier and wetter. In this game, with the conditions Saturday was cold but nice. Sunday was cold, but a little rainy and wet. It kept getting rainier and wetter. In this game, with the conditions getting worse, we would come out slow down 0-3. We were barely out of bounds on 2 throws that would have been sure scores afterwards. But we would eventually score after I was fouled on a Jeff hammer (incidentally, some of the Chicago guys think getting undercut is not a foul). THen Angus was wide open in the end zone. 1-3. We had a chance to make it 2-3, but I overthrew Reek wide open in the endzone. Pretty much, that is what happened all game. Just out of reach. Palmer just barely missed 2 hucks near the endzone. We were down 4-8 at the half and the weather was getting worse (does anyone remember college regionals in AA, well the weather was as close as it could get to that!) We would take the first 2 points of the half as our team d would tighten up. Max made some nice grabs. Rook had a hot layout d. DP had a nice garbage d on his man (no one takes away garbage better) Phil got clobbered on a huck, but of course, it was contested (sorry Paul, you cannot hit a receiver when he tries to catch it). They liked to play physical, I mean football physical, and contest and call us wusses and stuff. OUr d would slack a little, but our O was rolling. Then as we had the disc down 8-11, I think, a big flash of lightning. I looked wusses and stuff. OUr d would slack a little, but our O was rolling. Then as we had the disc down 8-11, I think, a big flash of lightning. I looked at their captain, should we call it? Then probably the biggest sound of thunder I have ever heard in my life. I mean someone dropped a bomb right in Cincy. Wow. Everyone to the vans. Sit for 10 minuts. The team that won the other semis was leaving. We decided to call it quits. A little shitty of weather... We were trailing, could we have come back? I think so, but you never know....
All in all, it was a fun weekend and a pretty good tourney. We learned our O was solid late in the games and our d, just has to play a little more consistent... Angus had a spectacular weekend. I think I can count his turnovers on 1 or 2 fingers. Jeff was throwing well all weekend. Plus, he can play in the cold now. Bonus. Phil was a good receiver, plus very good with the disc. Plus, he is finding new buddies DP and Max to replace Paul. Hales was solid when he cleated up. Rook, uh, he still plays "decent" d, plus his O is more solid. Max, although he showed he was human, is still a star in the air. Skow played good d. Raj and Joe had pretty awful Saturdays, but very good Sundays. DP still solid and playing well on both star in the air. Skow played good d. Raj and Joe had pretty awful Saturdays, but very good Sundays. DP still solid and playing well on both sides. Jesse was a solid addition to the handling and defensive core. Nick E. always seems to be in the right place and open. Palmer still stepping more on D, plus becoming a big factor on O. Dave S. played pretty solid and was open a lot. Brix solid O and nice d work. Kohn and D-pak played some pretty good d, especially on the mark. Ralph did what he does best, that is run around and reek havoc. Reek played solid, especially deep. Scooter played great defense, especailly on handlers. Fridge did not play a lot, but played some quality points. Riverdance brought offensive firepower to the rookie squads. Rob added much needed legs on Sunday as he added some good depth to our team. Peter played some nice o (big grabs) and solid d. Chicago had some really not so good players who bitched a lot and really, should not be on a competitive team because they aren't any good (sorry I had to throw that in there).
Basically, it was a solid weekend, except for the weather (Which chris scott has already apologized for).
MagnUM summary from Terminus
courtesy of TIM
Hello all. I have slept a little now, so I will attempt to give a summary.
As I mentioned before, we went to Atlanta for Terminus this weekend. I along with Coach Rick, Fridge, Gus, and Cone flew, while most everyone drove. Some left around 1, while others had to stay a little longer, because Jeff had the keys to the 2nd van. He rode in the first van. (Jeff later confessed to us he was having a "stupid week" and did not realize this until Lexington). But everyone eventually made it.
We were lucky enuf to have a 1st round bye, which gave a little more sleep. We were in, what we called the jizum pool. Why? Well, we are magnUM (one of the many names is a condom), but the other 2 teams were UNCWilmington Seamen and the Tufts E-men (read it fast and it will cum to you).
Warning-- we played 8 games, details may not complete
Anyway, UNCW first. The wind, well it would be a factor all weekend. It seemed worse on the Polo fields than everywhere else, luckily we had practiced outside for a decent amount of time in the wind. This game seems like an eternity ago. Wow, it was a pretty strict upwind/downwind. They would get up early, 3-5, I believe. We looked like we had just traveled in vans for nearly 12 hours. Oh wait, but eventually our offense began to click. I believe Phil was pretty tall in this game. Really I do not remember much. WE started to play Z a frustrate them. Zac had a huge point block as the marker on our endzone, a scoober later and we scored. Sean had an almost layout grab to take it to half, beautiful. I believe we won something like 11-8... I am not sure
Well, on to the Tufts game. We ended the last game fairly well, and we were hoping to build momentum. But we did not, they came out 0-2, including a spectcular layout grab to open the game in the endzone. We would eventually right back 3-2 and cruise to half with a 7-4 lead. We were a little taller then them and it showed. I hung one way, way up high (I mean like way up high) to Dave Scott, our 6'7" guy and well he is 6'7" and no one else is. He caught it. We would shut the door and win 12-7. Our Z was able to give them probs and our O was playing pretty damn consistent... ANything else, I forget...
So after going 2-0 (there were 7 pool of 3), we were regrouped with the winners of 2 other pools, Yale and Georgia. We would play Yale right away. We needed to come out right away. This time we would. We were in control of half 7-2, but it was a pretty uneventful half. Yale seemed rather uninterested in playing. They had nothing on our man and even less against our z, and we were not even playing that well. OUr markers were having a field day in the zone with about 4 different with point blocks. But our endzone O would not be good. Turning it over and playing down to their level was not staisfying. Zac saved my ass at the end of half by catching a stall 9 laser forehand into his chest. The rest of the 2nd half was much of the same. A lot of people were playing, and playing pretty well, but Yale was not. We would get up 12-4 before the rookies almost finished the game a couple of times. Our O was stopped once, but eventually we won 13-6
We would have a bye and then a game against Georgia for the #1 seed in our half of the bracket, the loser would get a #2 in the other half. This game was pretty good for our offense, but a low point for our d. I was able to get open long consistently as I scored the first 4 goals for magnUM, catching some beautiful throws for Hales, Phil, and Jeff. We were able to force some turnovers in our zone on helix type hammers, but our man d seemed unispired at times. We would get the first break of the game, but they would answer back and take half 6-7, I think. The second half was much of the same, we were able to tie it at 9s, 10s and 11s. They were pulling down a lot of swill, especially swill about 6 inches above me. Damn. They were on O, They worked it and I was burned long. 11-12 Georgia. We need to score. We do not. They patiently walk it after a number of passes and win 11-13. Damn, but we were 3-1 for the day, not too bad. But we do not get a first round bye and have to wake up early and play...
We would get back to the hotel, shower, and then get to Olive Garden for dinner, man they had no clue what to expect, but it was cool. Almost 2 hours later, we would get back to the hotel, hang out a little at the party and some of us watch "The Rock" on Saturday Nite Live (WWF stuff)...
Anyway, we got up early to play the home team, Georgia Tech. It was even windier then yesterday, and the game was even more of a upwind downwind game. We played a good huck and z strategy, with Phil and Rook making some beautiful grabs near or in the endzone. Me, Gus, Hales, and Jeff were enjoying the dowinwind points. HMMMM, stall 3, better huck it. We would score the first upwinder. I forget how. They had this guy who something comprable to the wheel of death, and very well. He threw it once on the downwind point and I was deep deep. I was just caught standing still as I thought, there is no way in hell he is going to throw something like, Oh shit!!!... Anyway, they would get the next upwinder 6-6, but we would strike back up wind off a timeout. Rook was wide open in the endzone, 7-6. THey are going up wind to start, so we got that point. They started to play a man/clam/zone that we started to have problems with, but eventually we solved, once with Palmer open D and another time with Raj wide open. On the D side, Rook and I were in the back wall of the zone and saved us multiple times on their upwind points. Also, Dave S., Max, and Hales were tall on thier downwinders making it tuff for them to score. Eventually, we wer up 10-9, gamepoint, they were going upwind. Winner stays in the A bracket. After a couple of turns on our Z, they started to work and it looked as they would break it, but I was successfully able to bait them into a throw up the line, I catch it and see Phil go. 75 yards later Phil catches , even though his legs were landed on and twisted his ankle. He was ok folks, he is an ultimate player... magnUM 11 GTech 9
Our next game was against upstart Virginia. We had to come out psyched to play, and we did 5-0 run to start the game. They seemed tired, but we played above that. Incidentally, this field had one 20 yard endzone, and one endzone less than 15 yards, but with a picket fence one yard behind the back line. Oh and a big hole that someone on their team found. ANyway, we played on. We would take half 7-2. Everyone was playing pretty well. They were having trouble against our z. Thus, we kept playing it. They were getting some lucky hammers, but we were getting some of them as well. I tied Phil's sectional of record of throwing 8 goals. Phil and Hales hooked up on a hammer which Phil macked a couple of times. Palmer had some nice runs and catches, as did ROb, who just outran his man all over the field. Peter Chi made a nice grab on some swill and later would throw a goal. Gus with a huge grab in traffic, but was ruled not in. That is ok, Gus likes to throws goals. Skow probably caused someone on their team not to be a father, ever. Riverdance felt the wrath of Joe's powerful shoulder. What I am trying to say is, it was a pretty good game for us, we would win 12-6, as the rookies came close to ending the game on the upwind side. Damn close.
Now it was time for the semis, against Madison, Wisconsin. Uh oh, can you say big game. Anyway, time to play. They would go up 2-0, but we would eventually even it up. Hales to me deep. Someone to Phil deep. Rook with a huge layout on the dump, and we tie up the game. Eventually, it was 5-5, I forget a lot of our scores. They score on their o point to make it 6-5, and then stuff and score us 7-5, Madison. Hmmm, we do not want to go home yet. We score on our first O point of the half, 6-7. Then trade points, 7-8. Finally, our d is stepping up and we get a D. I forget how, I think maybe Max. (It could have been Rook thoughm he had so many hot d's, that I think he is my hero.). We tie up the game 8-8. Or 0-0, game to 5. We get another D point. Angus and DP were both close on bids, but Rook showed them how. 9-8 magnUM. Then 9-9, then 10-9, then 10-10. Somewhere in this Max saved my ass on a piece of crap hammer, I did get the previous block though... Then Wisconsin breaks, 10-11. Shit we had trouble with thier Z. They play it again. Phil with a bomb to Dave Scott. Money. 11-11. We get a d the next point, but fail to convert. 11-12. They play Z again. Many throws later, me to Jeff. 12-12. Damn it fellas, let's play d. We get another d, fail to convert 12-13 (cap is at 15). We score again 13-13. Or 0-0 game to 2. Rook decides, this is d time. A huge layout D, 5 yards from our endzone. Timeout. Angus kills his man up line 14-13. We our on D, let's get the d. If we have problems, huck it. Hales gets to deep throw, patient, walk to the line. Jeff gets a step deep. Then to me. Nothing up line, dump to Jeff. Go deep. Catch, left foot in. Frisbee game. magnUM 15 Wisconsin 13. Freight train baby...
Now the finals, against CUT. We start out on O, the disc was in and out of my hands in the endzone, they score. Damn. Point 2, disc out of bounds. CUT up 0-2. Third point, I huck it out of the endzone. We get the d back, DP open in the endzone, relax 1-2. We tie it right back up, Phil to Dave Scott. 2-2. Both teams trade points 5-5. Palmer open long and throws the score. They score to make it 5-6. A high stall throw results in a turn over. they take it to half 5-7. Damn, let's go fellas. They start off on a 2-0 run. Soemwhere in this run. I almost catch a huck, but it bounces away, and their 6'5 guy laysout and grabs it. Eventually we score again, 6-9. A huck to my man, I layout and get it, he lands on top of me. Jeff comes in. We turn it. Then Scooter with a huge layout in the endzone, saves the point. We score 7-9. They huck it, Rook and his man get a piece of it, but it is still playable. No it is not, Rook just laid out past you. D. WE get to the endzone, but do not score. Failed chances, failed chances. 7-10. CUT scores the next 2. 7-12. Eventaully we score on a beautiful Phil throw to Angus in the endzone. 8-12. Alright last stand anyone? We get the turn. A miscommunication on and deep cut that was supposed to come in. One break mark and then huck, just out of our reach. Ball game, CUT 8-13....
Again, I forgot a lot of stuff. Probably hundereds of Rook's Ds, and Max catches and jeff throws, but man. It was an awesome weekend. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed this weekend... TIM

Hello all. MagnUM traveled to South Bend, Indiana this past weekend to play in White Smoke IV hosted by our good buddies Notre Dame. Some of us drove down on Friday, others waited until bright and early Saturday morning. Anyway, we made the trip and came ready to play...
Saturday was a nice day. Temps in the mid 60s, but there was a little wind factor. Blowing upwards of 20 mph. Sunday was just as nice temp wise, but also not as much wind, just a little breeze.
Now, just to throw a change-up, I will not do a game by game review, rather an abbreviated highlights version with some critical analysis...
Scores--
Saturday-
| magnUM | 17 | ND "B" | 6 |
| magnUM | 17 | Purdue | 3 |
| magnUM | 17 | Illinois | 9 |
Sunday-
| magnUM | 13 | Purdue | 7 | Quarters |
| magnUM | 15 | Illinois | 4 | Semis |
| magnUM | 15 | South Bend Club | 13 | Finals |
As you can see it was kind of screwy, but both Purdue and Illinois "upset" the higher seeded teams they played, thus rematchs took place--
Highlights--
1. Easily the play of the tourney, on gamepoint in the finals, I bombed a huck to Raj which he promptly skiied one of South Bend's best players on the goalline and then chilled out and threw the score. When I mean Raj sky-ed, I mean he made an amazing grab against a great defender high in the air...
2. Warning! Dave Pohl may be flying. DP running down in the 2nd half against Illinois in the semis and laying out for the d on the first pass. Beautiful. DP had a pretty good weekend all around, but this play was awesome.
3. The groves of hares playing defense. Or Brian Hargraves the co-Saturday MVP with his huge D on the glass fields. In one point against Purdue, we kept turning it over so he could get more layout d's
4. The monster canadian comes back. Chris Scott suited up for magnUM once again and came back right where he left off, high in the air over defenders. Twice against Illinois making big grabs that your average North American only dreams of. Chris was the other co-Saturday MVP (incidentally, both Graves and Chris played well on Sunday as well).
5. The energizer bunnies running the freight train. This one is for all the rookies, who although did not play a ton, they did their job when they got in. They ran their ass off on d, and then ran their man into the ground on O. Zac and Scooter on the marks of our zones, continually going "No Soup!!" Sean was instant energy on defense and then would kill his man on a turn. Reek coming close to his first layout d (don't worry you don't always get the wind knocked out of you). Cone had a big d game against ND when he continually sprinted by his man for the d. Yair showed his O prowess with some solid throws into the wind and some in the air O and D. D-pak, putting the d into "D"-pak. Fridge played the enforcer role more than once on d. Plus, his offense is as "cool" as his name.
6. I want to be tall. Both Phil and Dave Scott, playing close to their height. They ruled the airs when they were in. They also proved big guys can throw, Phil with his forehands and hammers. DS with his monster pulls in the finals and big throws to the not so big receivers.
7. Against all odds. Jeff Bischoff, whose Duke Blue Devils are still the best team in all the land, came out ready to take it out on the other teams. He repeatedly would huck it downfield and then celebrate by saying a prayer for Coach K and the kids. There is always next year.
8. Daily Angus substitute. With Angus sitting out amidst major retirement rumors, Joe B. was forced to step up and played the silent role on the offense this weekend. He saved the best for last when he had 0 TO's in the finals and numerous, numerous touches.
9. Dreads in full effect. Alex and his hairstyle had a nice weekend of d, consistently making the other team look bad on field, as well as off the field. It is how you look, especially when he was wide open on the offensive end. They are just amazed by his looks.
10. Hales Yeah. Whether it was Hales getting sandwiched in the air, but still making the amazing grab in the finals to keep the O alive. Or the usual forehand bomb. Or the not so usual backhand bomb. Or the stellar d, Hales was, well, solid.
11. Is he really a rookie?? No one believes his name because Rook plays the best d in the country (luckily Karl is in Thailand). Whether it was not letting his man touch the disc. Or helping out with some layouts in zone or poach form, Rook always has the opposition on their toes. His offense has made him a definite 2-way player.
The last thing I would like to mention is Flywheel. Not only did they get to the semis. Not only did they stay and help us through the finals. More importantly, they helped win the party. I think it was obvious that Michigan was well-represented on the field and off the field. It was a definite team effort the whole weekend.
See ya

MagnUM summary from Great Lakes Open 2000
courtesy of TIM
Hello all. magnUM traveled to Toledo for the Great Lakes Open hosted by Oberlin (yes Oberlin is in Cleveland, but don't worry about it).
Anyway, I will give a very short rendition, if anyone else adds stuff you are more than welcome...
Saturday, well, you saw the weather. Let's just say that mother nature was a factor. Snow for part of the first game, but wind and coldness all day. We had shifts going to our cars to keep warm during the games---
Scores--
Saturday-
| magnUM | 13 | Northwestern | 7 | |
| magnUM | 13 | Oberlin | 7 | |
| magnUM | 13 | Texas | 8 | (Yes, Texas was here. Weird.) |
| magnUM | 13 | Notre Dame | 8 |
So the basic summary for each, we take a big lead at half (either 7-2 or 7-3). Then we cost to victory in the 2nd half, with the wind claiming victory to both teams. Interesting highlights of saturday--
1. Angus somehow not committing a turnover all day
2. Phil's greatest in the Texas game to Chris Scott
3. Phil, Rook, and Joe (i think) all having backwards throws trying to throw forward
4. We were down 2-0 in the ND game, and then made a huge run to take half 7-3. That was a good run all around for us.
5. Lots of turnovers
6. Lots of d's
7. Cold
8. Windy
9. Cold
10. Graves hot d all day
So we were 4-0 after Saturday, we had a first round bye and awaited the Texas v. Iowa winner on Sunday. Sunday started off just as bad of weather, but by the time we started playing in was not too bad. The sun would eventually come out. The wind was still there, but a little better than the day before.
Sunday scores/highlights--
