Syllabus

Description

The syllabus is the official outline for your course. As an instructor, if you or your department has prepared an online syllabus, you can direct the Syllabus tool to link to it. You can also create a syllabus from within the Syllabus tool.

A NOTE ABOUT SHARING YOUR SYLLABUS PUBLICLY: Unfortunately, CTools does not currently have a public portal or search function that allows students to easily find your syllabus if they are not enrolled in your class. There are two ways, however, to give your students access to your syllabus. These are described on this help page:

Sharing a Syllabus Publicly on CTools

Creating a Syllabus

For Instructors/Owners, there are two modes:

1... General View (which the students see)

2... The Create/Edit mode

Create/Edit Mode

To enter the Create/Edit mode, click Create/Edit at the top of the window

OPTION 1 - Create a New Syllabus Within CTools

1... To create a new syllabus in the Syllabus tool, click new in the Create/Edit mode.

The "title" will be displayed in black bold text above any text in the WYSIWYG editor.

2... Enter the content into the box provided.

3... Click Post to save the new section.

Click Move up or Move down to reorder Syllabus sections.

- To delete a section, click the box under the "remove" column and then click Update.

- Entries saved as a "draft" will appear normally for Instructors/Owners in the viewing mode, but not for students. The text is not marked as draft in the viewing mode, only in the Create/Edit mode

OPTION 2 - Redirect to an Existing Syllabus

To use an external website page show a syllabus, click Redirect.

Enter the URL of the website in the box marked "URL." Then click Save.
(The address will work whether http:// is placed in the box or not.)

Note: The external website page cannot be a page in your CTools site. However it is possible to use the redirect tool to point to a file in Resources, for example a pdf or word document.

- To do this first upload a file to the Resources tool

- Click on the Revise Properties link next to the title of the file

- Copy the URL of the file and paste it in the Redirect URL box provided. Then click Save.

To remove a redirect, delete the link text in the redirect box and click Save

Previewing and Printing a Syllabus

When your syllabus window is open, click the Preview link along the top of the window to see how the syllabus will look to site participants.

Also, when your syllabus window is open, you can click the icon of a printer along the top of the window to open a printable version of your syllabus.

To return to the main syllabus window, click Create/Edit.
