Environmental Justice is the belief that all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic standing, deserve to live, work, and play in a healthy environment.

Who are the Environmental Justice Group @ the University of Michigan?

The Environmental Justice Group at the University of Michigan is a multi-cultural, multidisciplinary student group dedicated to promoting environmental justice for all communities affected disproportionately with environmental burdens, particularly low-income communities and communities of color. We seek to educate ourselves, our peers, and the community at large on issues of environmental justice. We believe that all individuals and communities, regardless or their social and economic conditions, have the right to a clean and healthy environment for themselves and their children. The Environmental Justice Group supports communities empowering themselves to exercise these rights.

Some of the things EJG has done in the last two years:
  • Organized the first ever National Student Environmental Justice Conference
  • Teaching junior high and high school kids about EJ, neighborhood planning, and citizen's rights and responsibilities through the King/Cesar/Parks (KCP) Program
  • Education/Awareness workshops in the dorms
  • Information and membership gathering at Environmental Rallies and Festifall
  • Article in the Black Student Monthly newspaper
  • Community/University forum on EJ in Southeastern Michigan
  • "Environmental Justice and the Ideals of Martin Luther King Jr." from Vernice Miller, NRDC's director of EJ
  • Hafsat Abiola, daughter of the then-imprisoned Nigerian President, speaking about Nigerian Democracy, Multinational (Oil) Corporations, and Environmental Justice
  • Dr. Owens Wiwa, brother of the late Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and Goldman Environmental Prize winner Ken Saro-wiwa, speaking on the Ogoni peoples'' struggle for a healthy place to live under the shadow of Shell Oil
