UMINDS
About UMInDS
The goal of UMInDS is to establish a degree-granting program that will advance knowledge about, by, and for people with disabilities and to promote their full and equal participation in society. The first stages of the initiative propose a number of resources for the university community and the community at large, including:
- A graduate seminar scheduled each semester and offered to graduate students for academic credit and open to the public, featuring speakers from both the University of Michigan and elsewhere. Seminars use realtime captioning projected to a central screen, and each seminar is posted to the web in RealAudio to attain maximum accessibility.
- A design team made up of members of UMInDS and the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living frames research projects and topics and provide access to the disability community for scholarly purposes.
- Research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students and supporting faculty to enhance the understanding of scholarly work and careers in Disability Studies and related areas:
- An annual poster session/conference on work in Disability Studies and Michigan
- Mini-grants available to faculty and students pursuing projects relevant to Disability Studies, including funding for conferences
- The Michael Erik Myatt Distinguished Dissertation Award in Disability Studies
- The UMInDS Summer Internship at the United Nations
