Some of you have already expressed an interest in getting your own
Kendo equipment. For beginners, the first thing (and probably the only
thing for now) that you might want to get is the Shinai. You will find
that there are several kinds of Shinai available. However, we suggest
that you get the 39-inch bamboo Shinai because it is standard for all
adults. The special women's 38-inch Shinai is acceptable, but you need
to make sure that it is match the women's shinai regulations for
weight. You should not have to spend more than $40 for a medium quality
Shinai.
If you want, you can also get the Hakama and Gi. The most common color
for them is navy blue or black. For these, you will spend at least $80.
So, make sure that you will practicing Kendo for a while before you buy
them.
At this stage, you definitely do not need the Bogu. Usually, you will
be told when you should get it.
We have compiled a list of several websites where you can buy your
equipment. There is also a local store called Kim’s Sports &
Martial Arts Supplies located near the corner of E. Liberty and S.
Division. Before you buy your equipment from there, we encourage you to
look online first because you might be able to find deals or better
prices.
