Avenue Q wins 3 Tony Awards including Best Musical
Avenue Q, co-written by Men’s Glee Club alumnus Jeff Marx (1989-
1993), recently won three 2004 Tony awards including Best Musical,
Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The show, which
opened on Broadway in July of 2003, has been the recipient of numerous
awards and has broken much new ground. Meanwhile Jeff and cocreator
Robert Lopez are at work on a second stage musical, a musical
fi lm, and two television projects. We would like to extend them our
congratulations as well as our best wishes on their future endeavors!
Howard Watkins receives Paul Boylan Award
We are pleased to report that Howard Watkins, accompanist 1988-1997,
is this fall’s recipient of the School of Music’s Paul Boylan Award.
Howard is the fi fth graduate to receive this award given to recognize
outstanding accomplishments and signifi cant contributions in the fi eld
of music, theater, or dance within 10 years of graduation from the
University of Michigan School of Music. Congratulations Howard;
many snaps of the fi ngers go out to you on this achievement!
Eugene Rogers returns to Michigan as lecturer
Eugene Rogers, assistant conductor 2000-2001, has returned to the
School of Music as Visiting Instructor of Choral Music Education for
the 2003-2004 academic year. After completing his Masters of Music
in conducting in 2001, Eugene spent two years as choir director at
Grosse Pointe North High School and served on the faculty of the Boys
Choir of Harlem. Eugene’s responsibilities this year including teaching
secondary choral methods and observing student teachers.
