Former Clubber Elected to Congress
Former Clubber John “Joe” Schwarz M.D. (BA ‘59) was elected to the United States House of Representatives this past fall
from the 7th District in Michigan. A practicing otolaryngologist, Dr. Schwarz’s many accomplishments include: reaching
the rank of Naval Lieutenant Commander during his 2 tours in Vietnam, serving 8 years on the Battle Creek City Commission,
the last 2 as the Mayor of Battle Creek, his election to the Michigan State Senate from 1987 to 2002, where he served as
its President from 1992 to 2002. His election the past year to Congress is another significant achievement in his
prestigious career. Congressman Schwarz sang bass during his time in Club from 1956 to 1958, and also served as
stage manager for a year.
Brook Stanford Receives Award for Work in Broadcasting
Brook Stanford (LSA ‘63/Rack.’64) was recently inducted into the
Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences,
honoring his 35 year career in Broadcasting. At KOMO-TV, the ABC
affiliate in Seattle, Stanford produced “People Helper”, a feature in the
newscast which told stories of people in crisis, and asked for help from
the audience. In 13 years, the series produced more than $9 million for
people in need.
Brook is a 22 year member of the Seattle Men’s Chorus, which has toured
Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and 12 US states. SMC is the nation’s
largest community chorus with 250 singing members.
Brook serves on a committee of the Alumni Club of Seattle which is
working to host the Glee Club in 2006. He was a member of the Club and
the Friars from 1959-1964.
