The winner in this year’s contest for lyrics to a new Michigan song is Robert Bartlett,
alumnus of the Medical School and Professor Emeritus of Surgery. The lyrics committee chose Bartlett’s
Michigan, Remember from a pool of 25 excellent submissions; it will be set to music by conductor Paul Rardin.
Since its founding in 1859, the Men's Glee Club has finished every concert with a selection of Michigan Songs.
These songs have become a staple in celebrating the University of Michigan's campus life and beautiful scenery since its founding.
We sought words that:
- Highlighted the unique qualities of the university its setting, and/or its mission.
- Celebrated the university from a contemporary perspective
- Told the story of your connection to the university
The lyrics:
"Michigan Remember"
Summer rain, harvest wane,
spring of learning come September.
Celebrate, time will wait
while tomorrow lasts forever.
Drink of maize Ann Arbor days
and Michigan, remember.
Green to gold, shy to bold.
Life explodes like rich October,
What magic place, what time ago
Did wisdom grow from words and numbers?
Where did notes evolve to song?
At Michigan, remember?
Strike the red, furl the green.
Maize and blue flies in November.
Hallowed halls, tavern walls.
At the hearthside when the victors
tales are told, good men and bold
will Michigan remember.
Warm, her eyes. Long goodbyes.
Crystal laughter one December.
Misty lights, snow-lit nights.
Fire of youth now glowing ember.
Mem'ries fade. The game is played.
My Michigan, remember.
The Glee Club will premiere the new composition at its April 14, 2007 concert in Hill Auditorium. Congratulations
to Robert Bartlett, and hearty thanks to all who submitted lyrics for this competition.
