Dr. Philip Duey directed the Club from 1948 to 1969. Dr. Duey arranged many specific pieces for the Club, compiled the University of Michigan Sesquicentennial Songbook, and during his tenure brought the Club international fame by initiating periodic overseas tours, and taking two first place awards for Male Chorus performance at the annual International Musical Eisteddfod Festival in Llangollen, Wales. In recognition of his hard work and dedication, the MGC alumni established a scholarship fund in his honor in 1974. Scholarships are awarded based on musicianship, dedication to the Club, and financial need. Since 1975 when the first awards were made 159 scholarships to 118 different students.

James D. Shortt was the faculty advisor of the Men's Glee Club from 1953 to 1986. His countless hours of work in support of the Club's overall activities, the overseas tours of the 50's and 60's, and mentoring of students were greatly appreciated. In 1955 Jim took steps to establish an endowment to financially assist student members of the Club. In 2006 the Club's Executive Committee and Alumni Scholarship Committee took steps to have this endowment renamed in Jim's honor as recognition of his long dedicated service to the Club.

The family of Mr. Quinn established the scholarship to honor his love of music and the University of Michigan. Larry was a member of the Men’s Glee Club from 1934-1936. The Club became a second family to Larry and provided him with lifelong friends and a dedication to the University. The scholarship is administered by the School of Music and is awarded each year to a member of the Men’s Glee Club, a member of the Women’s Glee Club, and a member of the Amazin’ Blue. The award is presented for dedication to the performance group and for inspiring an esprit de corps among the members of the performance group. These scholarships were first awarded in 1994.

The Lincoln family established the scholarship to honor the memory of father and son members of the Men’s Glee Club. Philip Lincoln began his studies at the University of Michigan in the summer of 1930 and graduated in 1933 from the School of Literature, Science and the Arts. He returned for graduate study in Organ performance in 1935-36 with the renowned organist Palmer Christian and again in 1954, receiving a Masters degree from the School of Education in 1956. He was a proud member of the Michigan Men’s Glee Club during 1931-1933 and again in 1935-36, singing 2nd bass and holding the position of Club Secretary. Through his organ performance and teaching, he shared his love of music with family, friends, and colleagues. Philip Lincoln, Jr., a 1964 Literature, Science, and the Arts graduate of the University of Michigan, was also a proud member of the Men’s Glee Club, singing baritone during 1961-1963. He was a member of the 1963 European tour, which won the Club’s second prestigious first place award for Male Chorus performance at the annual International Eisteddfod Music Festival in Llangollen, Wales. This opportunity to tour Europe was a life changing experience for Phil. It led ultimately to his decision to enter the Foreign Service, becoming a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department from 1966 to 1996. It was in this position that Phil dedicated his life to the betterment of relations between the United States and countries in the Far East, especially China. The scholarship award is based on musicianship, dedication to the Club, and financial need. It was first awarded in 2002.

Although not a scholarship, the four Llangollen awards given each spring recognize members who have shown great leadership and dedication during their tenure in Club. Langollen, (Lang-laf-lan) Wales is the site of an internationally renowned choral competition. The Club has competed at Llangollen six times and has taken four first place awards. The Glee Club is the only choir from the United States to take so many first place awards. Langollen represents a proud part of the Club's tradition, so we in turn present Langollen awards to the four men who embody the spirit of this great achievement.
