What are the required texts for MUSEUMS 301?

There are five texts for MUSEUMS 301.  You’ll need the following for the very beginning of the term:

Weschler, Lawrence, “Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder” (New York: Vintage Books, 1995)

Smith, Rupert, “The Museum: Behind the Scenes at the British Museum” (London: BBC Books, 2007)

The remaining three texts will be needed later in the term:

Genoways, Hugh, and Mary Anne Andrei, eds., “Museum Origins: Readings in Early Museum History and Philosophy” (Walnut Creek, Calif.: Left Coast Press, 2008)

Gurian, Elaine Heumann, “Civilizing the Museum: The Collected Writings of Elaine Heumann Gurian” (London: Routledge, 2006)

Hein, Hilde S., “The Museum in Transition: A Philosophical Perspective” (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 2000)


When and where will the new MUSEUMS courses be offered?

The new minor will begin in the Fall Term of 2009.
MUSEUMS 301 is scheduled as follows:

Lectures: Mon/Wed, 4 pm in Room 125, Frankel Wing, Museum of Art.
Discussion Section: Fri, 10 or 11 am in Room 049, Frankel Wing, Museum of Art.

MUSEUMS 301 will only be offered in the Fall.

MUSEUMS 401 and MUSEUMS 409 will only be offered in the Winter.


Where are the Undergraduate Minor in Museum Studies courses listed?

The MUSEUMS courses are listed under "University Courses" in the Course Guide.

 

May I double count electives for both my primary concentration and the Undergraduate Minor in Museum Studies?

For LS&A students, one elective may be shared between the primary concentration and the minor.  Students are advised to contact their academic advising office for additional information about degree requirements.
