What is NROTC?
NROTC stands for Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. The NROTC Program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. As the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the NROTC Scholarship Program plays an important role in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.
Why should I participate in NROTC?
Whether you are from a military family and wish to experience the military culture, want to see see the world, can't wait to fly an F/A-18, or just want to help your country, NROTC allows you to obtain a college degree and experience a normal college lifestyle while still fulfilling your training to become a commissioned officer in the Navy or USMC. If you receive the scholarship, NROTC will pay your tuition.

If I did not receive a scholarship or missed the deadline can I still participate in University of Michigan Naval ROTC?
Yes, you can participate in the University of Michigan NROTC on a non-scholarship basis through what is called the College Program. If you meet certain eligibility requirements and have been admitted to either the University of Michigan or Eastern Michigan University you can be selected as a College Program Midshipman.
What is the College Program?
College Program midshipmen can begin the program as freshman or sophomores and participate in the NROTC, but are not provided any financial compensation by the Navy. They compete for scholarships reserved for College Program midshipmen and must pick up a scholarship or contract (earn "advanced standing" status) with the Navy before their junior year. We have been very successful at the University of Michigan NROTC Unit - all of our College Program midshipmen that have met the NROTC's physical and academic requirements have successfully earned an NROTC scholarship before the end of their sophomore year.
How do I apply to be a College Program midshipman at the University of Michigan or Eastern Michigan University?
Once you have been admitted to Eastern Michigan University or the University of Michigan, you can apply to the College Program directly through the University of Michigan NROTC. The application can be found on our website.
I applied for the NROTC Scholarship and have not heard anything back. How can I check the status of my scholarship? When will I know?
If you completed your application online, you can check its status at the same website (www.nrotc.navy.mil). If your application was completed with a Navy Officer recruiter, you can check status through your recruiter.
NROTC scholarship boards convene monthly from October through April. If an applicant is not awarded a scholarship at one board, their package will automatically be reviewed again at each subsequent board until the last one in April. The announcement of each boards selected applicants is promulgated quickly after they adjourn.
Can I participate in the University of Michigan NROTC if I attend the University of Michigan Dearborn or University of Michigan Flint?
No, to participate in the University of Michigan NROTC you must either attend the University of Michigan Ann Arbor or Eastern Michigan University.

The University of Michigan - December 1
Eastern Michigan University - August 1
NROTC scholarship - January 31

What financial help does the NROTC scholarship provide at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University?
The NROTC scholarship at the University of Michigan or Eastern Michigan University provides a full tuition scholarship. In addition, scholarship recipients are paid $375 per semester to help pay for books and a monthly payment of $250 for freshmen, $300 for sophomores, $350 for juniors or $400 for seniors to help cover living expenses. Room and board is not included in the University of Michigan NROTC scholarship.
What type of time commitment is NROTC while in school?
As a midshipman, you will be required to take one Naval Science class each semester (two 2 credit classes during freshman year, and a 3 credit class each semester thereafter) and attend one 2-hour drill session each week as part of your military training. You will also have to attend two physical training sessions each week. In addition, to become a well-rounded officer, you will have to take some standard classes (such as English, Military History, and Physics). These will fit in regularly with all majors. There will also be other opportunities to volunteer in the battalion ranging from fund-raising with other midshipman to playing IM sports.
What happens when I graduate?
Upon graduation, NROTC Scholarship Program midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Midshipmen without scholarships may also receive a commission through the College Program. College Program midshipmen must serve at least three years of active duty service if they accept a commission. The service commitment times vary according to what community in which the graduate has selected to serve.
