Played football but can't anymore? |
|
I came to U of M with a little
voice in my head telling me that I could be Michigan's
version of Rudy. I loved football and had played for
years, and couldn't really imagine a life with no
athletics. Then I heard about the rugby team. I found a
new game without the starts and stops of football, and a
club without the pressure and politics of many teams I had been on. I had found the best sport
in the world, and, fittingly enough, it attracts the
finest teammates I have ever had. Playing rugby has
defined not only my college years, but my life.

Looking for a way to compete
athletically? |
I started playing because I got
pretty sick of playing basketball at the CCRB.
My dad had played rugby his whole life and encouraged me
to give it a try.
Once I started, I realized it was a great game and a
great way for me to
continue on my athletic career. It was great to be back
in a structured
environment that was going to give me the chance to set
and accomplish goals
and make the best out my athletic abilities.

Miss the contact? |
I have played basketball and
football since I was in elementary school all the way
through high school. I ran some track my junior year.
Then my senior year after I was done with football I
started playing rugby so I could stay involved in a high
intensity, contact sport. Playing rugby at Michigan was
one of the best decisions I made during my freshman
year. I never imagined how many people I would meet
through rugby. The best times of my freshman year all
involve rugby.

Want camraderie? |
I think the thing I like most
about Rugby and the UMRFC is the sense of camaraderie
that exists between the players. Like most of the other
guys on the team, I've played sports almost all my life,
but I have never grown so close to so many guys so fast.
The best part is that this camaraderie exists on and off
the field; and between generations. Many of the alumni
come back and invest in the younger players. They are
always there to give tips, offer advice, and even help
you get a job over the summer. Joining rugby was like
joining a brotherhood. At times early on, it almost felt
like a secret society or a "fight club". You'd walk
around campus and see people with a black eye, or
limping a bit, and you'd just give a nod. You might not
have known their name yet, but you understood, and you
knew they did too, what it meant to be tough, to be
disciplined, hard working, a team player, and above all,
a rugby player.
