SCP Alias Policy

The current policy of the Student Conferencing Project (SCP) is that responses entered pseudonymously or anonymously, which mention another person's name, belong to that other person. As such, the person mentioned can ask an organizer to retire the response if they feel it is inappropriate.

The SCP cannot, however, offer the same protection to those participants who register under alias names. (We used to call these pseudonyms as well, but have changed the title to avoid confusion with pseudonymous responses containing a ! at the beginning of the response.) Even if a participant using an alias name puts their real name in the brief description, we are not able to give the alias name the same protection we offer real names.

This policy is not meant to discourage use of alias names, but to inform those who choose to use them that they may not have the protection they may think they have. ITD has policies which protect individuals and their names, but do not protect alias names, and we cannot offer protection that ITD does not offer in this case.

Note that this policy only deals with pseudonymous and anonymous responses or items or bulletins. If another participant uses his or her registered name, alias or real, then the problem must be resolved between the two participants involved. Also note that in extreme cases the SCP can offer help, depending on the situation. You can bring up problems with the organizers or in the conference MEET-PLANNERS (Type MP at a DO NEXT? prompt to join).

Finally, note that this policy is not designed to protect pseudonymous or anonymous responses. If there is a serious violation, the identity of the person who entered such a response can be identified.

If you have already registered with an alias and wish to change it to a real name, type CHANGE NAME at a DO NEXT? prompt and follow the prompts.

If there are any further questions, please send a message to an organizer of Meet-Students.
