World-renowned tango dancers and teachers Ney Melo and Jennifer Bratt
are currently based in San Francisco where they have their studio
"TangoVida". For years they have inspired their students to dance
tango with feeling, musicality, cadencia, and connection - the way it
is danced in Buenos Aires. The atmosphere in their classes is relaxed,
personable and lively, and they place equal emphasis on the lady's
role as the man's. Technique and the essence of tango, both
fundamental to dancing well, are stressed in whatever step is being
shown. Their instruction is highly respected and sought out by
beginning and advanced dancers, as well as other teachers and
choreographers.
In addition to running TangoVida, Ney and Jennifer are currently
touring the world. They are the invited maestros at the upcoming 2009
Capri Tango Festival in Capri, Italy. They also regularly teach and
perform in Poland, Singapore, Malaysia, Romania, Slovenia, Australia,
and New Zealand as well as extensively all over North America.
Well respected by the tango community in Buenos Aires, she has taught and danced at numerous festivals around the world. Along the way she has partnered with some of the most famous tangueros of her generation: Osvaldo Zotto, Fabian Salas and Mariano 'Chicho' Frumboli, to name a few.
The technical precision, fluidity and elegance of her movements and notable capacity of improvisation characterize her dance.
Her complete knowledge and her passion for teaching makes her a very appreciated and requested tango teacher being invited regularly to give workshops in Europe and North America since 1996. She has taught in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Italy,
France, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and US.
Since its inception in 1999, she has been a member of the teaching faculty of the Argentine International Tango Congress (C.I.T.A) held annually in Buenos Aires.
Patricia's introduction to Argentine tango as an unsuspecting
undergraduate quickly grew into an obsession which consumed all other
interests. Since falling prey to tango's addictive powers, she has fed
her cravings for the dance and its haunting music by traveling
throughout the country as often as she can, and at home by teaching
and DJing regularly at local milongas.
Korey Ireland is a professional composer turned tango-addict. He
brings a lifetime of musical experience and an unquenchable thirst for
tango to his teaching. He developed his dancing on social dance
floors of the world's tango capitols and with a great deal of
guidance from some spectacular teachers (Winkler, Jeurissen, Valle,
Naviera, Krebs.) Originally from Kansas City, Korey has spent the
better part of the last five years traveling and teaching tango in
England, Holland, Spain, Germany, Russia and Argentina, sharing his
passion for tango, music, expression, and connection. In recent
years, this mission has grown to include work with aspiring tango
musicians at festival throughout North America and Europe to create
live music for dancers. Korey has accepted a position to begin
teaching this spring at the Conservatory of Music at the University
of Missouri in Kansas City; he will teach tango dancing and direct a
tango orchestra, while continuing work on a recording a CD of original tango music.
While quietly going about his business, Lung-Kuei has attracted both envy and affection throughout the tango community. The men want to dance like him, and the women like to dance with him. His immersion in the tango world has been a happy success.
An integral part of the U.S. tango scene, he runs off to the best festivals across the country with tremendous zeal. As a result, he's one of the more sought-after leaders in the country, and has also developed a keen sensitivity toward what makes a milonga go well. Although his dancing is already very clean and quite musical, he's constantly working to make it more musical, more precise, and more lovely for his partner. His most influential teachers have been Rebecca Shulman, Robin Thomas, Evan Griffiths, Diego Di Falco, and Silvina Valz.
Lung-Kuei started studying tango in 2005 and began deejaying in 2007. Gradually he built a solid reputation as a deejay and now he's invited to spin tunes at the most popular and best milongas and practicas in town. Tango festivals fly him in to DJ. His choices are not strange: he just plays one good song after another, placed in sequence with sensitivity.
Lung-Kuei has zero attitude about what he does well, and always keeps a sense of humor about things, while remaining a serious milonguero, 100% dedicated to the craft, the life, and the music of tango.
Shorey's first exposure to tango, watching a tall, skinny guy in a
beret teach a group of awkward college kids how to walk with grace,
immediately captured her imagination and she has hardly looked away
since. Coming from a background in martial arts and classical music,
she is driven by the desire to make her own movement as clean, fluid
and musical as possible. She counts among her strongest influences
Tomás Howlin, Cecilia González and Alex Krebs.
Shorey is an accomplished teacher whose primary goal is to give her
students those tools necessary to make their dancing as enjoyable as
possible in the shortest amount of time. As great as her love of the
dance is her love of the music, a passion which is evident whenever
she steps behind the DJ booth. She DJs all over the country (Portland,
New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, Ann Arbor, etc).
She loves to keep both very traditional and very alternative crowds
dancing all night long.
Shorey is happily living in the San Francisco, though she still
travels as much as is humanly possible.
Andreas started out as a ballroom dancer while still a high school student in Germany.
Despite his enthusiasm for ballroom dancing, the true addiction didn't start until he discovered
Argentine tango about 7 years ago. Andreas has traveled to multiple national and international festivals
(Sitges, Capri, Siracusa) and, for the last several years has been involved in teaching in the Ann Arbor community
and DJing at festivals, milongas and practicas.
Since Tango music is such an integral part of the dance, Michael feels that DJs are highly influential with respect to tango development within a community by the music they choose to play. DJs are responsible for establishing and controlling the energy/flow at milongas and consequently, impact how well people dance together and the overall success of the event. As a DJ, Michael's goal is to engage the dancers on the floor with the music and each other to create an intimate tango experience.
