Purchasing Furniture

Craigslist is a centralized network of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements and you can easily find second hand furniture and other stuff there: http://annarbor.craigslist.org/

Marketplace is another network for UofM students. Once you get your umich id and password - you'll be able to find advertisements by UofM students: marketplace.umich.edu

University sells their used furniture in Property Disposition near the North Campus at reasonable prices. : http://propertydisposition.umich.edu/

Instant Furniture is a second hand furniture store near the Central Campus: http://www.instantfurniture.com/index.taf

There is an Ikea store in Canton which is about a 30-minutes drive from Ann Arbor: http://www.ikea.com/

Grocery Shopping

There are a few grocery places near the North Campus within walking distance (around 15-20 minutes). The cheapest one would be Kroger and it is open 24-hours and 7-days a week. Bello Vino is another place near Kroger; even though it is a bit more expensive, you'll be able to find fresher vegetables and fruits. The other options is Buschs which is probably the best place for vegetables and fruits around North Campus and you can shop online from there. Whole Foods and Hiller's are farther away from campus and more expensive, but you'll find higher quality and larger variety of products. There are also small shops in downtown that you can find simple grocery stuff.

There are some megastores where you can find almost everything from pillows to pens, kitchen appliences to electronics. Here is a list of the major ones: Wal-mart, Target, Meijer. For office supplies and electronics: Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, CompUSA, Circuit City and Best Buy.

 

Buying a Used Car

To find a used car, look in:

- Autotrader.com
- The Ann Arbor News classifieds (daily newspaper for the Ann Arbor community)
- Michigan Daily classifieds (daily campus paper)
- University of Michigan Marketplace
- University of Michigan Newsgroups: umich.for_sale and umich.forsale
- The University of Michigan Credit Union (bulletin boards)
- University Kiosks (large pillars covered with signs and various announcements)
- University bulletin boards:
especially useful are the boards located at the International Center, Pierpont Commons, bus shelters serving the North Campus/Geddes area, and Northwood Family Housing (posters placed in laundry rooms and on notice boards in parking lot areas)
- The Tradin' Times: a listing, like the newspaper classifieds, of hundreds of used cars for sale by private owners and dealers. Available at many drugstores or gas stations.
- Used Car Dealerships: costs might be higher if you purchase your car through a dealer
