Why Sigma Alpha Mu?
Fraternity Life
The College Fraternity experience offers endless opportunities for your college years and beyond. Many successful leaders in business, politics, education, and entertainment developed their skills in the Greek Community, many as members of SAM.
The camaraderie gained in the College Fraternity experience will last a lifetime. SAM seeks to attract those of vision and character. As a member of a fraternity, you have the opportunity to develop friendships with people of many different backgrounds and people of all college ages. The college fraternity teaches lessons that no university class can teach. The spirit of brotherhood and fellowship that is learned as well as sharing each other’s experiences and growing together in the collegiate years is unique and can be only learned in a fraternity experience. Once you graduate your memories of specific classes and exams may fade, but the friendships you make in Sammy will remain vivid for a lifetime.
Academics
Greek Letter Organizations were originally founded to further scholastic achievement for all members. This tradition holds true at the University of Michigan. In fact, in Fall of 2004, SAM was recognized by the U of M Interfraternity Council as having the 2nd highest fraternity GPA on campus. Nationally, Sammy has ranked near the top of all national fraternities in academic achievement. Currently over $70,000 in scholarships is given away annually to our student members who demonstrate need and merit. When one experiences scholastic difficulty, SAM and its members help. Only in a fraternity can one find fellow students and an entire organization so interested in the welfare of the individual.
Philanthropy
Community service and philanthropic fund raising are integral parts of the Sigma Alpha Mu experience. Our national philanthropic programs have raised funds to combat Pediatric AIDS and heart disease. SAM constructs performs multiple philanthropic events each year to benefit worthwhile causes.
Leadership
The opportunity for leadership development is one of the greatest assets of membership in Sigma Alpha Mu. Hands-on experience as a chapter officer, committee chairman or active member allows you to develop skills that will benefit you throughout your college career, as well as in your professional endeavors. Greek men play a major role in all aspects of leadership at the University of Michigan and beyond. Many of this nation's great leaders developed their skills in the Greek community. Some famous Sammy leaders include: David Stern - Commissioner of the NBA, David Kreeger - Chairman of Geico Insurance, Dr. Arthur Vineburg – Renowned Heart Surgeon, Leonard Goldenson - Chairman of ABC, and numerous government figures including congressmen, ambassadors and judges.
Social Life in Sammy
One of the most important aspects of Sigma Alpha Mu college life are the social events. Our Social Chairman along with the Social Committee is always working on planning events with sororities, which include mixers, football tailgates, off-campus date parties, semi-formals and formals. In addition, fraternity brotherhood events to Peking House, Detroit Tigers games, and road trips to away football games and visiting other Sammy chapters are great ways to bond with brothers.
