Voice mail change planned for first weekend in February

Meridian voice mail, used by most staff and faculty at U-M, soon will be replaced by a new voice mail service. The change is planned for the weekend of Feb. 3 with availability of the new service Feb. 5.

Information Technology Communications Services (ITCom) officials say the service change is required because Meridian no longer is supported by the vendor, and a replacement with enhanced stability and security is necessary.

The new service is much like Meridian, since it uses the same access numbers and phone commands. These similarities should make the transition a smooth one, officials say, although users will need to do the following:

• Use a new initial password at first log-in, then change the password to a unique set of six to 16 digits.

• Reset personal settings, including the greeting that asks callers to leave a message.

• Retrieve any old Meridian messages from a temporary location, since they cannot be transitioned to the new service.

• Use the 10-digit phone number when accessing a mailbox from a remote location.

Off-campus Meridian users (those with Centrex lines) will remain on the current Meridian system for now, but will be moved to the to the new service later in 2007. Message Center users will not be affected by the Meridian transition.

More specific information about these changes is available on the ITCom web page ( www.itcom.itcs.umich.edu) in the "Announcements from ITCom" section.
