a) Environmentally-related efforts at UM
(Results of two neccessarily incomplete inventories in April 1999 and October 2000; focus was on physical campus management)

  • President's Office: Campus Master Plan development (Phase 1, 1998: Campus Master Plan Advisory Committee charged with considering "issues of sustainability" and suggests the development and management of UM properties to "support the ongoing processes that sustain life and […] promote their continuing function."

  • Plant dept.: Building Performance Team, Steam Waste Attack Team (SWAT), Energy efficiency education web site (computers, lighting, labs), Energy Conservation Project Account (ECPA)

  • Plant dept., Grounds and Waste: The eXchange Files program, Recycling program (paper, containers, transparencies, scrap wood & pallets, textiles) Community outreach program (web site, Recycling Matters newsletter), food waste composting program at residence halls, bicycle racks program

  • Plant dept., Facilities Planning & Desing: Sustainable-Building coordinator (June 99 - June 2000)

  • Plant dept., Facilities Planning & Design, Landscape Architecture group: Several pilot projects on native vegetation; general policy to avoid irrigation whenever possible; rainwater retention ponds for all new parking lots

  • Plant dept., Utilities and Maintenance: EPA's Energy Star Buildings Program, Lighting retrofits, DDC Energy Management System, Energy Conservation Measures fund

  • Plant dept., Plant Engineering: Energy Conservation assistance to depts., Indoor-Air-Quality assistance to depts.

  • Plant dept., Transportation Services: Operation of vanpool program for commuters (five 10 passenger vans provided for free); free bus passes for faculty & staff; free park'ride off-site for all UM members; all busses and trucks run on B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% regular diesel) as of Nov 2000; electric vehicles pilot program (6 Ford Rangers); purchase of more than 100 cars, which run on E85 (10,000 Gal E85-fuel tank installed (E85: 15% gasoline, 85% ethanol)), all new cars/minin-vans/light pick-ups to be purchased in the future will run on E85

  • Housing Department: Development of Sustainability Program

  • Center for Sustainable Systems: Development of Campus Environmental Perfomance Metrics and Annual Report

  • Property Disposition: Salvage, resale and disposition of equipment

  • Dept. of Occupational Safety & Environmental Health: P2000, Pollution Prevention Program (chemicals, pests, mercury, transportation, waste), storm water management, soil erosion control, air pollution control, clean up of contaminated properties, environmental planning efforts rolled into the campus master planning, control of discharge to sanitary sewers, review of design plans for environmental issues, waste management and disposal, spill control and emergency response, mercury reduction in medical facilities and dental school, pollution prevention initiatives, education
  • Purchasing Services: Re-manufactured printer cartridges program
