I am a graduate student in the School of Information at the University of
Michigan, hoping to complete my degree in May 1999. My
areas of interest include international science collaboration and higher
education administration. Currently, I am working for the UM
ATLAS Project, a new program directed toward the organization and
execution of modern, large-scale collaborative experiments.
Our first collaborative studies will be focused on high-energy physics
research at CERN. The UM ATLAS Project is partnering with
the School of Information in developing this first research project, and
will also draw upon faculty in the College of Engineering and
the College of Literature, Science and the Arts for additional expertise.
In higher education administration, I am particularly interested in the
issue of interdisciplinary research, and how faculty from discrete
disciplines goes about developing new programs that do not fit into any
particular school or college. One of the reasons I joined the
graduate program at SI is that it is an attempt to develop a School that
crosses many boundaries, with faculty in economics, computer
science, library science, business, as well as others.
I decided to take the Visual Communications and Control course this term
because I wanted to more fully understand the technical
differences between different communication media, and how they can be
made to work together. I am also enrolled in a course
called Understanding Networked Computing. The material presented in these
two courses has fit together nicely this term, and I have
a good base upon which to develop my knowledge in these technical areas.
