Augmented reality is an enabling technology that acts as a direct extension of our vision capabilities. It can serve as a way to "see-through walls" that normally would be opaque. Coupled with expert systems, voice recognition and computer vision augmented reality can provide essential information that would otherwise be unavailible or inconvient to retrieve or organize.
The hardware required is imperfect and quite expensive. HMD's are limitied in their field of view and resolution, tracking systems are prone to interference and inacuracy and the graphics servers are limited to low polygon/second rates. Hopefully, the systems that we implement will be increasingly powerful as the technology becomes more reliable and less expensive.
