Catching Up with Anne Thorius
It's hard to believe it was almost five years ago that Anne Thorius (pronounced Anna Tory-us) finished piling up the assists for the Wolverines.

Thorius finished her basketball career at the University of Michigan with 1,112 career points and as the career leader in assists with 537. In the 2000–01 season, Thorius lead the team in both assists and steals. In 2001, Thorius became the 3rd Wolverine selected in a WNBA draft. She was selected in the 4th round, number 58th overall, by the Orlando Miracle.

After her stint with the Miracle, Thorius, a native of Denmark, moved overseas where she played for Lotos Clima in Gdynia, Poland. Lotos Clima won the Polish National Championship and the Cup Championship and placed second in the Euro-League Tournament in 2001–2002. In 2002, Thorius returned to Denmark to play for BF Copenhagen. Lead by Thorius, BF Copenhagen won the National Championship and Cup Tournament. In addition to the team accomplishments, Thorius was named the Player of the Year in Denmark in 2002.

Thorius returned to Michigan in 2003 where she spent one season as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Oakland University. In 2004, Thorius returned to Denmark, where she currently resides.

Anne is currently pursuing her master's degree at the Copenhagen Business School. She is studying Marketing Communication Management and hopes to work in the sports marketing field upon completion of her master's degree. She is currently applying to the University of Oregon and the University of Michigan for a semester abroad as part of her master's degree.

In addition to her studies, Thorius plays for her hometown team, Hørsholm Basketball Club. They are the reigning National Champions, and runners-up in the Cup Tournament.

Q & A with Anne:

What is one of your favorite memories as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan?

Anne: "I cherish the times during football season - the tailgating, the walks to the Stadium, the atmosphere in the Stadium, and the fun times we shared during those games. Those experiences were unique when you have some great friends and teammates to share them with."

What kind of community and/or volunteer activities are you involved in?

Anne: "I am currently coaching a girls' basketball team. I am also the webmaster for the homepage for my basketball club—check it out (although it is in Danish—www.hbbk.dk)"

What do you enjoy about coaching the team?

Anne: "The team plays in a league where our opponents are a year older—my girls are born in 1989 and the other teams have girls born in 1988. I have enjoyed seeing them improve individually but certainly also as a team. Although they, in my eyes, lack the killer instinct, we time after time manage to beat the older teams. Our girls do a great job of executing on the things we give them on offense.

I also enjoy the challenges they give me as a coach - how do I communicate my point of emphasis and how do I motivate them in the best possible way. Coaching teenagers (and girls in their first year of high school) is especially challenging because they think that the whole world is against them at times - so how to you talk to them about tackling school, work, friends, boyfriends and basketball? I am challenged every time I coach them."
