Skip Links

Skip links can be an effective adjunct to standard navigation, by enabling visually-impaired users to skip over navigation links and go directly to page content. This provides an alternative to listening through each set of navigation links.

This site uses skip links in two locations: at the top of each page and after the subpage navigation heading. Screen readers recite the title of each page, providing context for the listener, and then announce the "skip to content" link. Similarly, screen readers recite the heading for subpage navigation, followed by the link.

Skip links are created by inserting hyperlinks at the top of an html page that go to anchor tags located prior to the page heading. It is generally considered good form to make skip links readable at the top of a document, although they can be hidden in the remainder of the document.
