Web Services HOME
Services to the U-M Community

Web Services undertakes projects as a series of interdependent activities. While they are generally performed in sequence, some activities are done at least partially in parallel.

    1. Content Analysis and Site Architecture
We work closely with our clients to develop a thorough understanding of the information that will be presented on the site. During this activity we'll:

    • Identify what information will be included in the site, the size of the content, and how frequently it will be updated
    • Determine whether it is available in electronic format
    • Identify any conversion that must take place

This activity also determines the precise structure of the site, ensuring that all content can be accommodated. The results of this activity are:

    • A diagram showing the hierarchy of the site and contents at each level
    • Specifications for interactive forms, search capabilities, etc.
    • Global and local navigational structure

2. Technical Specifications
This activity will determine the technical support required to implement and maintain the site. These include, at least:

  • Web server platform
  • Database support
  • Development tools
  • Maintenance tools
  • Forms processing/scripts

This step depends on the results of the "Content Analysis", which will determine the volatility and maintenance requirements of information and the technical support required.

    3. Graphic Design and Layout
At this step, we'll make page mock-ups for each section will be done so that you and others (audience focus groups may be of value here) have a chance to react to the new site.

This activity results in a well-defined look for the site that will serve as a style guide for the Site Production.

4. Site Production
Graphic elements, static pages, and database interfaces all come together during this stage of the project, resulting in a complete Web site. We'll

  • Integrate the site content with the graphic design
  • Develop any supporting technologies, such as CGI scripts and database queries
  • Install the site on the chosen hosting server

While this step is heavily dependent on the graphic design, some infrastructure components can be developed in parallel.

    5. Site Launch and Post-Production
Launching the site need not be the last step; it can occur while the site is under development. After the site has been launched, we can help you publicize the site by coordinating the launch date with news releases, advertising, and other media marketing to maximize exposure of the new site to the target audiences.

Once the site is functional, Web Services staff will be available to answer follow-up questions and help address post-production problems. Web Services can also provide user-friendly instructions on maintenance of the various sections, procedures for updating the provider database, and any other necessary documentation.

We can help determine the best tools to facilitate ongoing maintenance of the site and provide assistance in acquiring, installing, and using the tools.
