Web Services Private WebSpace

Supported Server Platforms

The web server, in all cases, has to be modified to work with this scheme. Currently, the web servers we're running require Solaris 2.5.1, but we are working on a port that will run on NT.

Our planned set of server platforms includes:

  • Apache-SSL on Solaris 2.5.1 (already running in production)
  • Stronghold on Solaris 2.5.1 (already running in production)
  • Netscape Enterprise on Solaris 2.5.1 (already running in production)
  • Netscape Enterprise on NT (released January, 1999)
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server on NT (release date undetermined)

The web server sets the "REMOTE_USER" environment variable for CGI scripts, so that the CGI scripts don't need to know anything about the authentication scheme to work within it, which speeds and simplifies development.

Documentation for setting up a web site with Private WebSpace is on the Web Services web site.

We don't currently have plans to port to any other platforms, primarily because other platforms either are not suitable for such a port (like WebStar on the Macintosh), or we haven't heard interest in ports for other platforms.
