Anime experienced very little change since the 1960s. The overwhelming success of Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) and Mach Go-Go-Go (Speed Racer) led to an increase in the production of anime. The American practice of using a static background with separate cells for movement revolutionized Japanese animation. The number of cells that needed to be produced was drastically reduced -- up to thirty percent fewer cells -- and so it became economically feasible to create thirty-minute episodes for TV release.
