By the 1990's, the prosperity that Japan had enjoyed had collapsed, due to unsound economic decisions and a region-wide recession in Asia. Perhaps following the trends in earlier times of economic trouble, Japan looked towards exports as a means of bolstering the economy. On the American side, the import of certain films moved anime out of the underground and near the mainstream. The most important of these imports in terms of opening the way to the popularization of anime in the United States are the Dragonball Z and Pokemon phenomenon. Here the tide began to turn: American companies, including the Disney Corporation, began to make inquiries on acquiring the rights to popular anime series and movies in Japan, hoping to capitalize on the success of the Pokemon craze.
