Midnight Blue

Midnight Blue is our vocal jazz octet originally formed in the fall of 2006 by School of Music senior Lisa Roth. The group name was coined by Deirdre Sprague-Rice as the winner of the "Name the Vocal Jazz Ensemble" competition held by the Glee Club in the spring of 2007. Since Roth's graduation in 2007, the group has been self-directed. They perform primarily a capella jazz literature for SSAA, though the occasional Billy Joel tune is not out of the question. In the fall of 2007, you could hear them crooning "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)" and "How Do I Love Thee?", a jazz arrangement based on the famous poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Repertoire for spring 2008 is set to include renditions of the classic song for the caffeine addicted "Java Jive," Rogers and Hart's romantic ballad "My Funny Valentine," Cole Porter's "De-Lovely" arranged by the group's very own Erin Rhode, and a jazzy send up of the children's lullabye "Rock-a-Bye Baby."

Members

Gabby joined the group in the fall of 2007 and primarily sings Alto I. Her sass in spoken word solos is underused, but that's soon to be rectified.

Gabriela Aguilar

An inaugural member of the group, Jennie's soprano I voice floats like a butterfly... but she's also capable of stinging like a bee when necessary.

Jennie Hegwood

Hayley with the beautiful brown hair is the newest member of the group, coming in as a mid-year replacement in the bass part. We've promised her no hazing... we swear.

Hayley Kallenberg

The lone freshman of the group, Elizabeth's voice is flexible enough that she sings Soprano II by (Mid)night (Blue), despite singing Alto I by day.

Elizabeth Krieger

Another inaugural member, Cait sings soprano II with the skill and ease of a veteran. But don't let her sweetness fool you -- she also has a mean right hook.

Caitlyn Plonka

The eldest member of the group, Erin joined in the fall of 2007 and insists on selecting songs that utilize her low D. She's also not afraid to test her skills as an arranger when so inspired.

Erin Rhode

Hana is a founding member of the group and uses her lush Alto I tones to fill out the complex harmonies often found in jazz literature. She also makes Julienne fries.

Hana Russo

Deirdre's been with the group since the beginning and came up with the name "Midnight Blue." Her highest Soprano I notes have been known to attract dogs from miles around.
