The only way in which a series could be made comparable for this
question over the whole period 1952-1992 was by creating the simple
dichotomies found in vars VCF0134 and VCF0135 (for 1956-1992 in
VCF0135).
From 1978 on, this question was administered with a "show card" that
contained categories (which corresponded to the codes in VCF0137) from
which the respondent could choose. Prior to 1978, the choices
available to the respondent (and the categories which were coded)
were those present in the question text as read aloud.
Note that code 1 includes 'in the country' from 1952,1972-1976, 'on
a farm' from 1956-1970, and both 'farm' and 'in the country, not on
a farm' from 1978-1992.
In 1992, this question was not part of the short-form questionnaire;
for short-form 'panel' cases, however, 1990 study data were
incorporated into the 1992 variable.
In 1994, 1992 data were incorporated for 'panel' cases.
