              MD EQ 9

Is there anything in particular about <Democratic presidential
candidate> that might make you want to vote against him?
        What is that? Anything else?

SUMMARY: NUMBER OF DISLIKES -- DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
        -------------------------------------------------------------------

        USE WEIGHT VARIABLE VCF0009/VCF0009A/VCF0009B.

Five possible mentions were coded in all original NES datasets.

MD category 9 comprises cases of systematic question exclusion, i.e.,
when a question was not present within a form (1972) or within a wave
(1952,1960), or if a question was omitted entirely that year
        (1954,1958,1962, 1966,1970,1974,1978,1982,1986).

Rs who responded "no" to "Is there anything in particular that you
dislike about the Democratic presidential candidate?" have been coded
here as 0 mentions; Rs coded DK or NA in response to the same question
have also been coded here as 0 mentions. In addition, Rs who
responded "yes" to "Is there anything in particular that you dislike
about the Democratic presidential candidate?" BUT who provided no
mentions (DK or NA in first mention) have been coded 0 here.

This variable refers to Stevenson for 1952 and 1956, Kennedy for 1960,
Johnson for 1964, Humphrey for 1968, McGovern for 1972, Carter for
1976 and 1980, Mondale for 1984, Dukakis for 1988, Clinton for
        1992 and 1996, and Gore for 2000.

In 1996 and 2000, randomization occurred for the order in which the
        Presidential candidate names (2 major party candidates and Perot in ;
1996; 2 major party candidates in 2000) were administered for the set
of 'likes/dislikes' questions; note that for each candidate 'likes'
preceded 'dislikes,' and both 'likes' and 'dislikes' questions were
administered for one candidate before questions concerning the next
        candidate were begun.

               0. Zero negative mentions (dislikes)
               1. One negative mention (dislikes)
               2. Two negative mentions (dislikes)
