        In 1972, form I respondents were asked this question in the pre-
        election survey while form II respondents were asked in the post-
        election survey.

        Prior to 2000, Rs who responded "DK," NA or "haven't thought
        much about it" to self-placement on the 7-point jobs/std living
        scale were not asked for party placements on this scale and have
        been coded 0 in VCF0513 and VCF0514.

        In 2000, telephone respondents were asked a series of branching
        questions; 2000 telephone data are not included.

        The order in which Democratic and Republican party placements
        were administered was randomized in the 2000 study.
