Which party do you think is more likely to favor a stronger
[1978,1980, 1984: more powerful; 1988,1992: a powerful] government in
Washington -- the Democrats, the Republicans, or wouldn't there be any
difference between them on this?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
USE WEIGHT VARIABLE VCF0009/VCF0009A/VCF0009B.
In 1964-1988,1992,2000, if R's response to the question,
Some people feel the govt in Washington is getting too powerful
for the good of the country and the individual person. Others
feel that the government has not gotten too strong.. 1964-1972:
Have you been interested enough in this to favor one side over
the other? 1976-1988,1992,2000: Do you have an opinon on this
or not?
was "no" (opinion) (1964,1976-1992,2000)/"no interest" (1968,1972), NA
(all years), or "DK" (all years), then the respondent was not asked
which party was more likely to favor a powerful government and VCF0521
has been coded 0.
In addition, in 1964,1968,1972,1976,1988,1992,2000 if R replied "yes,"
that s/he did have an interest/opinion BUT responded "DK" or NA when
asked for that opinion, then s/he was not asked this question and
VCF0521 has been coded 0.
In 1988,1992,2000 only, among Rs who indicated that they had an
opinion on the above issue, those Respondents who were asked which
party was more likely to favor a powerful government were LIMITED to
those Rs of the following two personal opinions: 1) The government
is too powerful; 2) The government is not getting too strong AND the
government should become more powerful.
That is, Rs in 1988,1992,1996 were not asked this question if they
personally felt that the government was not getting too strong BUT
felt that the government should stay the way it is (VCF0521 has been
coded 0 for such respondents). In addition, Rs who said in 1988 and
1992 that they had a personal opinion whether the government was too
powerful but who gave "other" or "depends" responses when asked for
that opinion were also not asked this question, and VCF0521 has been
coded 0 for them. If R personally thought the government was not too
powerful but, in reply to whether it should become more powerful or
stay the same, had a response of "DK" or NA, then this question was
not asked in 1988,1992 or 2000; VCF0521 has been coded 0.
Note that in 1992, 46 cases were not asked this question due to an
error in skip instructions (NA).
