        REGION - U.S. CENSUS
        -------------------------------------------------------------------

        USE WEIGHT VARIABLE VCF0009/VCF0009A/VCF0009B.

This variable represents the region codes of the U.S. Census. A
variable for U.S. Census-defined regions began appearing in NES
datasets beginning in 1980. For years prior to 1980, VCF0112 has
been recoded from the original ICPSR state code var, except for 1952,
        1954, 1962.

In the original 1952 and 1962 NES datasets, no state variable was
present, however the Cumulative Data File state variable (VCF0901)
was created for these 2 years from sampling location information; for
1952, 1962, CDF VCF0901 has been used to create vars VCF0112 and
        VCF0113.

In the original 1954 NES dataset, no state variable was present and no
other location information was available to create a 1954 version of
Cumulative Data File VCF0901 (state). For 1954, var VCF0112 has been
taken from a non-Census version region variable which appeared in the
original dataset and which was comprised of categories containing
unspecified states. The original 1954 NES region categories were:
        1. Northeast; 2. Midwest 3. South; 4. Far West.
These code numbers were not reassigned by recode for the 1954 data
        in VCF0112 and VCF0113. As a result, the 1954 data for VCF0112
and VCF0113 may not correspond exactly to the regions of other years.

For 1994 and 1996 panel respondents who moved after being interviewed
in the previous Study year, the region of the country coded in VCF0112
and VCF0113, as well as other geographical information included in the
Cumulative Data File, corresponds to the place where R was interviewed
        for the current Study.

           1. Northeast (CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT)
           2. North Central (IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI)
