In 1956-1964, R's response may have been that the community was a
'large' or 'small' city or a town etc., but the named community
was actually coded according to its approximate statistical
population at the time R was growing up. A community may thus have
been coded by NES into a size category different from the size
description chosen by R in his/her answer. "City" categories by
population were during these years (in general): <10,000; 10,000-
50,000; 100,000-250,000; 250,000+. For recoding into the codes
listed below, the 250,000+ category was placed into "large city",
while the lesser population cities were included in code 3.
In 1966-1976, R's own perception of size of community was used.
1. Farm, rural, 'country'
2. Town, 'small town'
3. City, not a large city
4. Large city
5. Other; mixture of communities; 'suburb'
9. DK; NA; no pre IW (1960)
0. INAP, question not used
