A Listing of All National Election Studies Data Files

This document lists in chronological order the data files that comprise the NES data collection. For each file, we provide the study number by which the data set can be ordered from ICPSR, the number of cases, and any special features of the file (such as multi-form questionnaires, oversamples, and the availability of contextual data or vote validation data). Not every study listed below is present on this CD.

1983 NES PILOT STUDY (ICPSR 8178)

A sample of 314 respondents from the 1982 Post-Election Study. Telephone interviews were conducted in July; 274 telephone reinterviews in August. The data set also includes the 1982 Post-Election Study variables.

A file containing coversheet, sampling, interviewer, and non-interview information, as well as census data for each sample segment, is available from the NES by special permission of the Board of Overseers. The file was put together for the purpose of examining non-response bias.

1987 NES PILOT STUDY (ICPSR 8713)

457 respondents from 1986 NES Post-Election Study, Form A, disproportionately sampled from strata defined by voter knowledge index. Computer-assisted telephone Interviews in May; 360 reinterviews June 2-July 2. The data set includes 1986 Post-Election Study variables.

A nonresponse "bias" file, consisting of sample and coversheet information for every address in the 1988 election study sample, is also available from the ICPSR. There are 3,503 records in this file.

1988 NES SENATE ELECTION STUDY (ICPSR 9219)

1988 NES PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION PROCESS [SUPER-TUESDAY] STUDY (ICPSR 9093)

Telephone interviews before and after Super Tuesday 1688 respondents participated in the reinterview following Super Tuesday.

1989 NES PILOT STUDY (ICPSR 9295)

614 respondents from the 1988 NES Post-Election Study, disproportionately sampled from strata defined by voter knowledge index. Computer-assisted telephone interviews using four forms conducted July 6 - August 1, 1989; reinterviews with 494 respondents September 6 - October 6. The data set includes 1988 Pre/Post- Election Study variables.

1990 AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY (ICPSR 9548)

A Field Administration file, designed to study nonresponse bias and consisting of sample and coversheet information for every address in the 1990 NES sample, as well as call record information for every call by an SRC interviewer at that address,is also available from the ICPSR. (This is a hierarchical data file.)

1990 NES SENATE ELECTION STUDY (ICPSR 9549)

1991 NES PILOT STUDY / PANEL STUDY OF THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF WAR (ICPSR 9673)

Comprises the 1991 Pilot Study and the second wave of a 3-wave 'Gulf War' panel study. (Wave I is the 1990 NES Post-Election Study). 1385 respondents from 1990. An attempt was made to interview every 1990 NES respondent. Computer assisted telephone interviews (3 forms), conducted June 4 - July 31, 1991. The dataset includes 1990 post variables.

Contextual data on racial composition of county included.

1992 ENHANCED AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY (ICPSR 6067)

The dataset includes variables from the 1990 and 1991 studies for the panel respondents.

Comprises the 1993 Pilot Study and the second wave of the 1992-1993 Panel Study on Securing Electoral Success. Wave I is the 1992 NES Pre and Post-Election Study. An attempt was made to interview each of 1005 cross-section respondents to the 1992 post- election study. There were 750 respondents in the second wave of the 1992/1993 Panel, which is also the 1993 Pilot Study. The dataset includes the 1992 Election Study variables for all 1005 cross-section respondents.
