1) New Reactions:

We have recently developed new methodology for the stereoselective synthesis of tetrahydrofurans and pyrrolidines. These transformations effect formation of both a carbon-carbon and a carbon-heteroatom bond and up to two stereocenters in a single step. We are currently exploring the scope and limitations of these transformations and the application of this methodology to the synthesis of other interesting heterocycles.

2) Control of Reaction Mechanism/Product Distribution by Changing Catalyst Structure:

We have recently demonstrated that four products can selectively be obtained from the same precursors by changing catalyst structure. We are currently examining the extension of these studies to other systems and transformations.

3) Tandem Catalysis of Two Different Reactions via in situ Catalyst Modification

We have shown that we can effectively carry out tandem catalytic processes that involve two significantly different reactions. These transformations were facilitated by in situ modification of the catalyst via ligand exchange, which allows each individual step to proceed with maximum efficiency. We are currently exploring the application of this technique to other reaction combinations.

4) Synthesis of Natural Products

We are currently interested in pursuing the synthesis of several biologically active natural products. Representative target molecules are shown below.
