Michigan rallies but falls short in overtime against the Buffalos

Date: March 30, 2012

Site: Boulder, CO (Kittredge Turf Fields)

Score: Michigan 13, Colorado Boulder 14

Next U-M Event: Saturday March 31, 2012 on Kittredge Turf Fields against Arizona and UC Davis, 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm, respectively

BOULDER, CO—The Michigan women's club lacrosse team made a close comeback en route to a 14-13 loss in overtime. With two starters out this weekend due to injuries, sophomore Julianne Patterson picked up the slack with six goals in today's game.

Boulder scored first, but Michigan answered for a 1-1 tie. That's when the Buffalos widened the gap to leave the Wolverines trailing 6-3 at the end of the first half. It seemed to be all about draw control — Michigan only tallied two in the first half, but coming back into the second half, Michigan played with new energy and mounted a fierce comeback.

Michigan won eight draw controls — Patterson with five — and rallied against Boulder. In the final seconds of regulation time, senior captain Ani Shekerjian scored on a free position shot to tie the game, for the first time since 1-1, and send the game into overtime. Michigan finally claimed its first lead of the game in overtime, and scored twice in the first overtime half, going up 13-11. But the Buffalos retaliated with three goals of their own to finish the game on top.

The Wolverines lost a close one, but they still have three games ahead of them in the Mile High Invitational.
