#5 Michigan 8 Adrian College 7
Ann Arbor, MI -- After holding a youth clinic earlier in the day, Michigan took the field for the first time in 2009 defeating Adrian College 8-7 in a scrimmage at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The Michigan surged to an early lead only to see Adrian battle back and close the gap to one goal. Michigan led throughout the contest but the Bulldogs were nipping at the Wolverines' tails until the final buzzer. Trailing by three goals, Adrian was able to score twice in a three minute span to cut the deficit to one. With less than a minute remaining, Adrian had possession and a chance to knot the contest but excellent defense led to a stop and the Wolverines were able to run out the clock and secure the exhibition win.
It was a homecoming of sorts for two Adrian Bulldogs as freshman Jovelle Ward returned to her hometown of Ann Arbor where she played for Huron High School. Head Coach John Sung returned to Ann Arbor where he worked for five years as an assistant coach with the Michigan Lacrosse Team before taking the head coaching position at Adrian last year in the team's first season as a varsity program.
Prior to the scrimmage, the team hosted a clinic for area youth lacrosse players. The approximately 75 girls in attendance were separated into several smaller groups and rotated around different stations led by the players. Goalies worked in a separate group, receiving instruction from Michigan goalies, Mynda Krato, Liz Mennen, Emmy Scheidt, and Goalie Coach, Ginny Hughes. The clinicians led participants through several different drills in 15 minute segments during the three hour clinic. After the clinic, several stayed to watch the skills they had just learned in action during the scrimmage.
Michigan will next be in action on Sunday, February
8th against the University of Toledo and Central
Michigan University. The Toledo game will start at 10:00
