MSU Playday

Michigan goes 1-2 at MSU Playday

10/11/2009
East Lansing, MI -- Michigan concluded its fall schedule participating in a playday at Michigan State University. The Wolverines played three games, finishing 1-2 on the day and 3-3-1 for the fall exhibition season. Michigan began the day against Miami University, falling to the Redhawks 11-7 in a dense morning fog. Junior Amanda Schutte (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon) and sophomore Ani Shekerjian (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day) led the offensive charge for Michigan with two goals each in the game.

After an hour break, Michigan faced off against Central Michigan. As the fog began to lift, so did the Wolverines' offense as Michigan coasted to a 12-3 victory. Senior Amy Johnson (Washington, D.C./Holton-Arms) and junior Jess Stanley (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian) each turned in a hat-trick while Shekerjian and sophomore first-year player Alaina Mezwa (Rochester Hills/Sacred Heart) added two goals apiece.

In the marquee matchup of the event, Michigan took on archrival Michigan State in the third and final game of the day. The Spartans jumped ahead early, scoring the first three goals of the contest en route to a 10-6 win. Johnson scored twice to lead Michigan but the Wolverines could not overcome MSU's three consecutive goals to start the first and second halves. Sophomore goalie Emmy Scheidt (Birmingham, MI/Seaholm) played well, coming up with nine saves but it wasn't enough to turn back MSU's tenacious attack.

The Wolverines will get a shot at revenge when they travel to East Lansing for a regular season battle in the spring. Michigan will practice six more times this fall before breaking until January.
