Michigan Suffers Heart-Breaking Loss to Colorado State in Quarters

Denver, Colorado - The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-15 decision to Colorado State in the USL-WDIA National Championship Tournament quarterfinal round on Thursday (May 10) in Denver, Colorado at Dicks Sporting Goods Facility.  Michigan led 11-9 at half-time, but CSU clawed back and eventually took the lead with just 11 seconds left as the Wolverines' saw their National Championship hopes come to an end.

CSU opened the game with three unanswered goals, but the Wolverines were able to draw the game even at 4-4 10 minutes into the contest.  U-M took a 5-4 lead three minutes later, and although Colorado State drew even at the 15-minute mark, the Wolverines notched five of the next six goals to take a 10-6 lead with six minutes remaining in the half.  The Rams scored three of the next four to close out the half, trailing by just two at 11-9.  Junior Ashley Steitz was key in the first half, notching four goals.

CSU opened the second half with two goals to draw even before U-M kept up the frantic pace with three unanswered goals to take a 14-11 lead mid-way through the second half.  The Wolverines were unable to close the door however as Colorado State went on their own run, scoring four unanswered goals for a 15-14 lead with just over a minute left.  Senior Noelle Frazier answered for U-M with just over thirty seconds left to tie the game.  Colorado State won the ensuing draw control, and scored the game-winner with 11 seconds left after a scramble in front of the cage.  U-M had a chance to draw even again after winning the ensuing draw control and earning a free-position shot with three seconds left, but the resulting attempt sailed high, and CSU walked away with the 16-15 win.

Michigan will battle intra-state rival Michigan State tomorrow morning at 9:00am MST in the first of two consolation games the Wolverines will play in the remainder of the week.
