Long Term Projects

Haiti Program

According to the United Nations, about 76 percent of Haitians live on less than $2 per day and 56 percent live on less than $1 per day. Because of this poverty, many children are undernourished. Approximately, 2.4 million Haitians are food-insecure. Due to a lack of food and sanitation, about 72 percent of 6-12 year old children suffer from iodine deficiency, and 32 percent of school-age children possess intestinal parasites.

A new regimen, called Medika Mamba, erases all signs of malnourishment within a month. Once children have gone through this medication, their stomachs will fully develop, allowing them to consume solid foods, which are generally donated by foreign countries. Failure to develop their stomachs will limit their consumption of these donated foods, causing malnutrition. YHO in close collaboration with a local Haitian hospital will sponsor about 50 children through Medika Mamba and will teach Haitians about proper sanitation. Plans are currently being discussed to implement this program.

Ozone House After-School Program

Ozone House provides many services for disadvantaged youths, often who have family and personal problems. They have been identified as a high risk group for domestic violence, neglect, and substance abuse. Over 98% of youths who received support from Ozone House have reported severe family conflicts and 66% have left home due to neglect, physical or sexual abuse.

One of Ozone House's services is to provide a safe and stimulating place for youths to come to after school. The program targets youths from the ages of 13 to 20 and offers free food and group activites. Youth Hope Organization will be collaborating with Ozone House to create a program specialized for these youths. Members of YHO will have the opportunity to create new areas of focus and to develop and lead workshops that addresses these areas. The program starts in the Winter semester of 2010, and the areas that will be focused on include creative expression and professional development. YHO will host approximately 12-16 workshop sessions each semester.
