DCHS Fundraiser
Chair: Tiffany Tsang
We hold an annual event to raise funds for science equipment in a Charter school in Detroit.
This year our fundraiser took place at The Arena on April 17th - and we raised $1350! Our funds come from a raffle and the generous support of The Arena. Most raffle prizes were donated from the community, and The Arena gave us a dollar for every beer ordered. The grand prizes were a Nintendo Wii and an airline voucher for Northwest, and we had enthusiastic participation in the raffle. Thanks to all who participated!
Relay for Life
Chair: Jay Pieczynski
We organize a team to participate in the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life 2007 went extremely well for us. Our team, The Kwok Walk, raised $4,020 for the American Cancer Society. This amount raised placed us 9th overall in total donations out of over 160 different teams. Although the weather was not in our favor, the event turned out to be great. Even through the cold and even some snow we still managed to keep walking for most of the 24 hours. Everyone involved had an excellent time, so much so that it was pretty unanimous that this should become an annual event.
Our team consisted of some GSC members combined with Dr. Roland Kwok's lab and some friends that decided to join in. Our only goal is to surpass this years total next year, and hopefully the weather will be a little nicer next time.
Habitat for Humanity
Chair: Cheryse Furman
Members of the BGSC and member departments participate in building homes locally.
This year this task has proven more difficult as building has slowed down due to the cost. Instead, smaller finishing projects are passed out individually.
High School Field Trips
Chair: Kevin Vannella
We organize opportunities for high school students to come visit U of M and learn about science.
This year AP Biology students from Ypsilanti High School will be visiting in mid-May to tour the medical campus and learn about the biomedical sciences.
Code of Conduct
Chair: Elisabeth Ashman
We are investigating proposing a set of conduct guidelines for incoming graduate students, and possibly creating a mentor-mentee agreement and forming a student-based review board to mediate in conflicts and academic integrity cases.
