CONSTITUTION FOR SNRE STUDENT GOVERNMENT
PREAMBLE
We, the students of the School of Natural Resources, in full knowledge of the responsibilities we share for the excellence of our education and the name of our School, and realizing that our individual voices may best be spoken to these ends through a duly elected body of student representatives, do hereby constitute, ordain, and establish this constitution for a Student Government of the School of Natural Resources and Environment.
Article I. Name
The name of this body shall be SNRE Student Government.
Article II. Responsibilities
Section 1. The responsibilities of SNRE Student Government shall include, but not be restricted to, the following: § To help maintain and improve the quality of education in the School of Natural Resources and Environment; § To represent students of the School on all issues of concern to them; § To strengthen the SNRE community through social events and service projects; and § To assist in the coordination of activities of future and existing School organizations, and to lend its support to such new activities as may be found desirable and beneficial to the School
Section 2 To better achieve these ends, SNRE Student Government, or an appropriate portion thereof, shall have the power to enter into agreements with the faculty and administration of the School, or their representatives, under conditions acceptable to the parties involved, on matters concerning School and department policy. Further, SNRE Student Government shall be represented on the faculty Executive Committee by two of its members. SNRE Student Government, or an appropriate portion thereof, shall also sit in council and on committees (such as the Academic Affairs Committee) with members of the faculty and staff to explore topics of mutual interest, and offer advice on such problems. If the student committee representatives are not members of the Executive Council (as defined below), they shall report to the Executive Council at regular intervals to be determined by said Council. Topics of interest may include, but not be restricted to the following: § Course and curriculum review; § Graduate Student Instructor issues; § Academic counseling; § Academic and professional standards, honors, and discipline; § Research policy; and § General scope and direction of the School and department policy.
Article III. Membership
SNRE Student Government shall be composed of six (6) student representatives, three (3) graduate and three (3) undergraduate students, from the School of Natural Resources and Environment or the joint LSA/SNRE Program on Environment. Specifically, the graduate officers shall include a Graduate President, one Master's Representative and one PhD. Representative. Undergraduate officers shall include an Undergraduate President, one 1st/2nd Year Representative and one 3rd/4th Year Representative. The six representatives shall be know collectively as the Executive Council. A Secretary, Treasurer and additional functional offices shall be elected by the Executive Council from among the representatives of the Council. Presidents shall be excluded from holding an additional office, however. Terms of office shall be two semesters long, though representatives may run again for additional two-term positions in future elections. Participation in elections shall be open to all students currently enrolled either in SNRE or the Program in Environment.
Article IV. Ratification
For this Constitution to take effect, the Constitution shall be presented to all eligible student voters, as defined in Article III, and at least two-thirds of all students voting shall vote in favor of ratification. A minimum of 100 students must take part in this vote.
