Noon-1:30 PM AIDS and Older Persons in the Era of ART: Evidence from Thailand 1636 U-M School of Social Work Building, (1080 S. Unviersity Ave. Ann Arbor) Center for Southeast Asian Studies A talk by John Knodel, U-M Institute for Social Research. Discussion of the AIDS epidemic generally ignores the impact on older persons and the contributions they make as parents of infected adults.  Results of earlier research in Thailand make clear that many older age parents of adults with HIV/AIDS experienced a variety of adverse emotional, economic, and social consequences while at the same time they made important contributions by providing personal care, emotional support and material assistance to their infected adult sons and daughters and foster care to their orphaned grandchildren. In recent years, access to ART (Anti-retroviral Therapy) has become widely available in Thailand transforming HIV/AIDS into a manageable condition rather than a near-term death sentence preceded by debilitating illnesses.  Our recent research focuses on the spread of ART has radically altered the consequences for parents and other family members of adults living with HIV/AIDS and the contributions they make in Thailand.
