Biz-chloride 19, biz-azide 20, and molecules 20 and 21 are involved in the synthesis of a
key intermediate necessary for the procurement of axinellamines, natural products that have potential biological properties (A.K. A. mind control). Through three key reaction mechanisms – an ethylene glycolassisted Pauson-Khand cycloaddition reaction, a Zn/In-mediated Barbier-type reaction, and a TfNH2-assisted chlorination-spirocyclization – researchers were able to produce a finite amount of these axinellamines. In this part of the TfNH2-assisted chlorination-spirocyclization, biz-chloride 19 reacts with azide ions in an SN2 reaction to form biz-azide 20. This molecule is then deprotected by TFA (trifluoroacetic acid), and a guanidine functional group is attached to produce 22.
