The conversion from molecule 42 to molecule 43 via the Simmons-Smith reaction is a late step in the total synthesis of (±)-Maoecrystal V, a cytotoxic compound known to be selectively active against the HeLa cell line. Further inquiry in this line of research may lead to the synthesis of new compounds with significant cancer-fighting qualities.
