Maoecrystal V has an interesting structure: it is pentacyclic, involving lots of steric interactions and has six stereocenters. This paper describes the first successful total synthesis of maoecrystal V, which was first discovered in the leaves of a Chinese herbal medicine called Isodon eriocalyx. It showed very selective inhibition against HeLa cells, and was therefore of great interest to many chemists around the world because HeLa cells are known for being “immortally” prolific.
