Meta-Analysis
Identifying, Evaluating and Pooling Evidence from Multiple Studies
May 28, 2009
CSCAR: Ananda Sen, Brenda Gillespie, Kathy Welch
University Library: Doreen Bradley, Gurpreet Rana
This one-day workshop will be presented jointly by the Center for Statistical Consultation and Research (CSCAR) and the University of Michigan Library. One segment of the workshop will examine a variety of information resources, leading to a comprehensive review of the literature. It will also cover specific strategies for searching major databases such as MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, and Search Tools as well as explore RefWorks and EndNote for citation management. Another segment of the workshop will discuss measurement issues, summarizing studies in terms of study design, participants studied, outcome measures and their standard errors, and the use of covariates.
The identification of biases, such as publication bias and its consequences, will also be discussed. The workshop will review when and if it is appropriate to combine estimates from different studies, and will present methods for combining estimates and obtaining appropriate standard errors for several types of outcome measures. The final segment will include methods for carrying out meta-analyses using statistical software, such as Stata and SAS. Graphical methods (such as funnel plots to identify publication bias, forest plots, and cumulative plots) will be included.
